Growing up with a strong emphasis on manners and fitting into a patriarchal view of respect—while also being part of the LGBTQIA community, particularly as an older sapphic—has meant navigating a complex balance between my true self and societal expectations. It wasn't just about being polite; I learned to use terms like “sir” and “ma’am,” along with other honorifics when I didn’t know someone’s name or to address my elders and authority figures. This upbringing shaped my interactions but also highlighted the challenges of reconciling my identity with the cultural norms around me.

But with the recent evolution in understanding gender identities and pronouns, I’ve faced a struggle in adapting how I address people. It feels awkward to let go of those ingrained manners, and I sometimes worry that I come off as rude or impolite. However, I also realize that misgendering someone is far more disrespectful, especially since I take issue when people refer to me as a girl or woman, which is a common occurrence where I live in the South.

I genuinely admire those who have fought for change and a more equitable society but I also understand that for many older folks who have lived by certain standards for most of their lives, this shift can be quite difficult. Just sharing some reflections I’ve been mulling over.

I am not transmasc and I am not transfem. I am neither completely cis nor completely trans, because these words were not made to describe the lives of people like me. I am intersex and agender and experienced ISIG.

I experience certian struggles and oppression faced by trans men and by trans women, but I do not have a 1:1 experience with either. I am very much aware of when people from one group of trans people make false assumptions and assertions about another based on ideas not informed by lived-experience.

I see transmascs making transmisogynistic assumptions about the lives of transfemmes and I personally know that is wrong because of my personal experiences, so when I see that, I say something about it.

This is in addition to listening to people when they speak on experiences I am not familiar with.

I think you all need to do a better job believing each other when you hear people start talking about the pain of living in cisnormative patriarchy. It's not a suffering contest.

There is a serious problem in the transfeminist movement regarding the belief that it is not only ok to ignore and dismiss trans men, but that it is transfeminist to do so, because they are men. Yes. We tell cis men to sit down and listen to women because they are priveleged and need to learn to awknoledge that privelege. But the thing is that isn't something you can just, map onto trans men, considering trans men are demonstrably not empowered to harm and granted privelege the same way cis men or cis women are. Transmasculinity is not a source of gendered privelege. Trans men and mascs are gender-marginalized and deserve to contribute to trans/feminist theory just as much as any other gender-marginalized group. The sheer dismissal of that fact is why I talk about transandrophobia so goddamn often despite this being a mainly intersex-focused activism blog.

If you as a trans man, transmasc, or queer masculine person uses transandrophobia to post, please make sure to boost poc voices in this tag!! Same for anyone who regularly post or boost the tag really. It was coined by a poc and absolutely should have our voices heard and I feel as if many of us end up being shoved down or white washed by the way people speak in the tag.

And boost that its and intersection of the *fear* of men and how that can be weaponized at different class levels!!

Those are two very important points that I feel are being blurred in this tag nowadays and it would really I think help with the confusion

Historically, bisexual identities have been misunderstood, ignored, erased, and stigmatized within the heterosexual communities, the LGBTQ+ community, and mainstream society, and this intersects with the experiences of bisexual butches.

the discrimination crosses over into pressure to conform to either heterosexual or homosexual communities with there being very little space for bisexuals to exist on our own without input (unwanted) from either group.

this is why it is so important to not only recognize the diversity in bisexual identity, but to uplift us and affirm us within our subsections of the queer identity. we have been here alongside you for centuries and it’s far past time to recognize us and our existence.

It’s one of the biggest reasons I refuse to hide my identity away. I take pride in being able to advocate for the bisexual community, the butch community AND the bisexual butch community. we need more visibility and we need more acceptance in all areas of bisexual presence but especially within the broader LGTBQ+ community, and the more of us refuse to be silent the stronger we will be.

I don’t expect to be understood anymore. Not when the people who have known me the longest still meet my eyes like I’m a stranger passing through. The ones who raised me who heard my voice change over the years, who shared the same walls and the same air they’ve never truly seen me. They notice when I grow quieter, but never wonder what silence is hiding. They see the shadows under my eyes and assume it’s just another restless night. They hear the stillness in my voice and mistake it for calm. So I hold it all now. In ‘at war with myself’ I wanted to convey the tension of intimacy between two people who are at odds with themselves internally and are thus experiencing a similar rift within their intimacy. Even though there is a clear connection between them, shown through their physical proximity and near identical poses, their backs are turned to one another. Which is a stance I chose to convey that they are navigating a reluctance toward trust, vulnerability, and facing each other lest they be seen to closely, too clearly. I also wanted to convey that with people who are at war with themselves, it is often difficult for them to cut through to the truth of who they are – because self-acceptance is difficult for and sometimes at the root of inner conflict – and harder yet for them to share true versions of themselves with others. Which is suggested through the mirror reflection of the pair and the smoke obscuring parts of their bodies.

This also annoys me to no end. It's such a double standard and it hurts to see culture(s) being ruined by ignorant people. The languages, clothing, hairstyles; all of it has been appropriated and it really does make me sad. Like OP said, the culture(s) are looked down on or made out to be awful or scary, all while their roots and the things that make them them are stolen. It's not aesthetic, it's not quirky, and it's not okay.
