G'day you all

I am the Swagman Wizard, pleasure to meet you. I thought I'd take this chance to introduce meself and what I happen to be about.

Now, for youse who are across the seas, or even if you're from the big smokes (by that, I mean the cities), you may be wondering what a Swagman is. Simple; I carry a swag - a Backpack or bundle with all my belongings, sometimes called a Mathilda - and travel the land. Sometimes, I find work and am able to stay in a town, sharing and growing my knowledge and crafts, but other times, I must traverse the bush on my own, surviving merely by my will and wit.

The label of the Swagman, historically, has been used solely for men, but I believe that anyone can embody the values and ethic of the Swagman. Again, concerning background, many of our histories focus solely on the Colonizing white Bushfolk, but it is the Swagmans purest belief that all who wish to - or must - partake in the lifestyle can do so; I, myself, am, a First Nations fella. The key uniting feature of the Swagman is, I will say, that there has never been one to make riches with this lifestyle! Granted, you may turn your weary afternoons to goldpanning, but you've got Buckleys (fuck all) chance of either previously being or becoming economically stable.

At the core, the Swagman philosophy is one of anti-authoritarianism, of workers rights, and of the freedoms to pass through nature without taking anything but the wisdom she gives, and leaving nothing but gratitude. It is a philosophy that encourages unbridled adventure, particularly through hardship, and survival in spite of the world.

Finally, I'd like to add; if you listen to the winds of this place, watch the birds and take the time to heed ancient warnings, youse'll come to find that this ancient land holds many secrets, powers, and even magic. I've come to pick up on these in my time, and so have earned the honour of becoming the Swagman Wizard. every time i start to feel cringe for being too deep in the hyperfixation i remember the intense depression i have waded through and have to remind myself that enjoyment is fleeting (so grab it with both hands), and life is for loving (so hold that love close), and if anyone thinks i’m cringe they must not be having a very good time (and i hope they can find a good time soon).

The memes are fun. The memes are aspirational and keep us reaching for the horizon.

But look down, too, at what actually is.

Endure pains now—suffer the inconveniences now—knowing that they likely involve unpleasantness.

The Revolution™ is fun to imagine and involves no pain. But the real world does involve pain, and it’s necessary to exercise the muscles needed for future work and opportunities.

Swagman Wizard Yarn #1: Karkalla and the itch

Like many youngfellas, one of my earliest introductions to the magic of this land was via the Karkalla, otherwise known as Bain or PigFace. These beauties grow mostly in the southern ends of the main continent, in sandy and (usually) ocean-girt soils. They’re drought hardy, spread quick, and are an easy way to add integrity to the soil, whilst providing groundcover and flowers for native insects. The best thing about these plants though? You can use them for a variety of things, including medicine.

Whilst the whole plant is edible, including the flowers, I want to focus on the “leaves” here; now, these are filled with juice, as by nature of the plant being so readily prepared for drought. Like Aloe Vera, you can use this juice to soothe anything from a mozzie bite to a gnarly sunburn: just snap a leaf off, rub the juice on the effected area, and you’re good as gold. The Swagman Wizard uses these for all manner of skin concerns, particularly on those dry bits that come from a long day toiling under the sun. In addition, they also make quite a nice jam to smother on your damper, which the Swagman also appreciates.

You can snap off a leaf or two on the go if need be, but be mindful of the plant and those that you share this land with, and thank the plant for any bits you take; everyone knows that potions, especially those used in healing, are more effective when thanks is given. A better solution in the longterm would be to propagate this plant for your own home, if you so have the climate and space, as they’re very easy to do so with.

Be mindful to not eat/touch/use any plants in any regard if you’re not 100% sure as to what they are. There are many plants that can bring you harm, so act with caution when interacting with nature at large, and only do what you are 100% knowledgeable and comfortable in doing. Note: the Swagmans nature advice pertains only to Australia, please seek resources from your own region/country concerning plant safety

You may think of this land as being harsh and desolate, and yet a quick gander will prove the absolute opposite. Filled with Flora and Fauna found nowhere else in the world, and with stories spanning over 60,000 years, the Otways is one such place that defies foreign biases and inspires great admiration. A variety of plants, water, shelter, and serenity would provide ample comfort to any Swagman, and the added richness of story and abundance makes it a must-go location for any self-respecting wizard

Teddy loved finding this Banksia in full bloom as he walked through the Australian Bush. He decided to pause to grab a quick rest on the branch supporting this flower and was reminded of how looks can be deceiving. From a distance it looked as though it would be somewhat spikey, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This Banksia had stamens that gently tickled Teddy’s cheek as he posed. Have you had an instance where you were incorrect on your preconceptions recently?
