I saw fish nesting, sunnies, I’m guessing, swimming around their little nests near the edge of the lake. This is how we get more fish!
Did a water change on Dimitri's aquarium today and had to take loads of footage afterwards lol
The CPDs seemed energized by the water change and chased and played with each other
This little one came out and stood on the rock for a while. I felt like he was watching me lol
The loaches slithered amongst the dwarf sag and didn't seem to mind that I was there.
Dimitri pouted in the plants for a little while, but soon got over the water change and came out to let me harass him with the camera.
He inspected things to make sure nothing was out of place.
I wonder what he actually thinks about.
In the end he decided he was fine with everything and went on his merry way.
Yummy baby brine shrimp!
A few hours post water-change! Last Friday I spent some time picking out dead leaves and clipping off damaged ones. I still got some anubias in the back that need a few damaged leaves clipped, but I'll save that for next weekend.
tank overviews for fun
10 gallon with a pair of Betta edithae, 2 nerites, and neos.
10 gallon with one female betta splendens.
10 gallon, empty for now other than some neos. may stock with another wild betta species but still exploring my options.
29 gallon, home to one female betta splendens, 10 peppered corys, and neocaridina shrimp.
not pictured: 5.5 gallon home to a male betta splendens that has been slowing down.
the 29 gallon right now— home to a school of peppered corys, a school of harlequin rasboras, and a young pearl gourami.
a look at the 40. it’s a really fun tank to watch, especially the silvertip tetras.

I spent hours on the floor glueing plants onto rocks. But hey my tank is finally looking how I want it.

:o !
It came from below!
This paper reaffirms what we already knew: typical breeder-style rack systems are not an ethical way to house ball pythons. It’s a behavioral comparison of 35 ball pythons housed in typical barren racks and then larger, well furnished terrariums. In the terrariums, they showed a variety of natural behaviors like climbing and basking, whereas in the rack this was obviously not the case.
@wheremyscalesslither Heather, have you seen this yet?
Considering animal welfare, animals should be kept in animal-appropriate and stress-free housing conditions in all circumstances. To assure
I’m off work so I thought I’d go through and pull some interesting excerpts, though I really recommend reading the whole thing.
First off, this is a preprint and not yet a peer reviewed article, so I imagine the officially published version may be pretty edited, but methodology and results speak for themselves. If this gets peer reviewed and published I will share that version as well!
This study sought to compare behaviors performed by ball pythons in typical barren rack systems versus in naturalistic terraria. 35 ball pythons of various sex, age, and morph were housed in racks for a minimum of 8 weeks, and then transferred to naturalistic terrariums.Â
