Norco is true blue cyberpunk and the finest sort of Southern US storytelling. Its mechanics are simple but carry a potentially punishing theme. What you can’t remember is lost. Every puzzle is a memory pattern puzzle. There’s no rewinding dialog. When the game moves between its past and present, there is no difference. Time collapses and becomes total.
The thing about cyberpunk as a subgenre is that it’s very rarely properly dystopian in the pure sense. It’s too interested in evoking a cathartic response. Too invested in creating a specific human experience.
When we think about dystopian fiction as a genre, we think about warnings. Cautionary tales. This isn’t strictly true, but it’s an association made for good reason. Dystopian stories have good vs evil conflicts at the core of their interests and structure. They’re comedic in the traditional sense. The ending has a moral, so they can’t be tragic. Big brother is a bogeyman and the Capitol is a dragon that you slay only to find out it was a hydra after all. Win or lose, warning and criticism are the point.
Cyberpunk often has too much noir in its veins, too much fatalism to be truly dystopian. It’s invested in the world and fate and choice and the ties that bind everything together. It’s philosophical and even critical, but not didactic. Its goal is to mimic something real and something unrealized at the same time. A dream or nightmare projection of a present and future that may as well be past in its totality. It is, at its best, classically tragic, pushing us past narrative into the realm of cathartic experience.
We use the word ‘tragic’ all the time.
A hurricane is a tragedy. It is an act of god after all.
Cancer is tragic too. Like a hurricane. Like a betrayal.
And oil companies may as well be acts of god for all they’re made of human beings and run on an amalgam of choices and liquified corpses and faith-based economics and for their place as the source of endless disease and war. They aren’t acts of god of course. Human beings did this, chose this.
Mutation that isn’t alive and cannot die, a mimetic avatar of the great birds that form the storm, connect the over and under worlds, give their lives to feed and defend the people, carry messages. Thunderbirds or eagles or ducks or cardinals or pterosaurs? All bursting from the ground as the First People did, like trees do, like oil does. Disease devours past present future. Cancerous and Material and Mesozoic and Mythic. Virtual intelligence as cryptid sludge.
All attempts at fighting disaster are acts of hubris. We know this really. That’s why we use the word tragic when we encounter the fight that was never really a fight and certainly never going to be fair. And because Norco is properly cyberpunk, it knows what to do with this conflict beyond the simplicity of good vs evil. You survive or you don’t. You find a way to stay human or you don’t. If you’re very lucky you discover what that means to you, being human.
Norco, Louisiana is a real place. A real oil town in Cancer Alley. Front line to real environmental disasters and inheritor of some of the worst failures of Reconstruction. Norco the game is written in the wake of Hurricane Katrina by a Norco native. It’s tragic, unsettling, poetic. The sort of game that provides an experience only possible in a game and simultaneously pushes you outside what you think game writing can do.
I grew up in Southeast Louisiana and put off playing this game because i was displaced by Katrina and i knew it would overwhelm me with homesickness and grief. The art is gorgeous and so accurate to places i remember it feels surreal
I finally played and finished the game yesterday. I'm so glad I did, it's absolutely haunting. It's going in my top 10 games I've ever played
i love recommending the locked tomb to people. it's sci-fi. it's dystopian. the main characters are from pluto. it's a comedy. it's action. it's murder mystery. it's gay. it's necromancer body horror with a side of the body horror being about love. god is a tumblrista who likes barbie and left beef memes. the earth is a big beautiful woman with a sword. 90% of the people are evil lesbians. god also hates billionaires. he may or may not have possessed obama at one point in time. he was a twitch streamer. the most powerful necro of a generation wants a coffee shop meet cute with the girl living inside her head. the girl living inside her head likes porn mags written into skin. the final book in the series will probably be released after we die. a murderous masc and a greek twink became a guy named paul. literally why wouldn't you want to read it
Reading Gideon the Ninth and I’m not convinced these ‘lesbian necromancers in space’ are ever going to make out, say they love each other or actually date. I’m getting the sense they’re going to spend all four of these books being utterly deranged in a hundred different ways that have never been done before in an extremely disturbing and lesbian fashion. This is not a criticism, I am very much on board for more of this, btw.
As a brown trans boy it sucked so badly to watch those “gender envy” slides on tik tok and see only white boys with fluffy hair. It was a little thing but it made me feel invisible even in my own community. So these are men that look like me and give me gender envy.
