‘Life is very full of sex, or should be. As much as I admire Tolkien — and I do, he was a giant of fantasy and a giant of literature, and I think he wrote a great book that will be read for many years — you do have to wonder where all those Hobbits came from, since you can’t imagine Hobbits having sex, can you? Well, sex is an important part of who we are. It drives us, it motivates us, it makes us do sometimes very noble things and it makes us do sometimes incredibly stupid things. Leave it out, and you’ve got an incomplete world.’ George R R Martin (source)
no disrespect to george rr martin but this quote cracks me up bcos every time i see if I’m just like, no george… you can’t imagine hobbits having sex. ;P
FOUND IT & I say again: I can imagine hobbits having sex just fine.
Georgey boy here forgetting Sam’s 13 kids.
he didn’t forget about them. he just doesn’t understand where they came from.
That’s even funnier, then.
george rr martin, looking at the gamgee family tree and crying: wh-where… where did they all come from…….
this man is apparently under the impression that we need sex scenes to understand that sex exists in any given story universe and honestly that explains so much about his writing
Gar går Martin not realising you can be “wholesome” af and Still have a sex life??? Maybe not all sex has to be some weird patriarchal bs game and can actually just be serving between people who love each other?? You ever think of that eh George??
Yall are 100 precent in the wrong here and what martin is talking about is an explicit literally study of Tolkiens work. Its not that tolkien doesn’t include sex scenes or children. Its about how chastity is a conceot throughout his work and in the way the hobbits are first presenred there are no women and how the elfmaids aren’t there etc etc. Don’t criticise smth because you dont understanding what its talking about. Also the fact you bring up tolkien as an example of non patriarchical anything is hilarious since the dude’s work is extremely sexist.
@dimitris670 Tolkien’s work is a story written to heal a bleeding heart. A heart of someone who has seen and lived through the war. His fantasy was not supposed to portray the realism of our realm, it was supposed to be escapist. It is a story of great and small, but nonetheless, good deeds. Tolkien includes few females but you cannot claim that he is in any way sexist. He does not portray them as sex objects with no value other than the ability to please men. There are few females in his works, yes, but they all have meaning and purpose. They are not a simple eye candy. They are creatures with thoughts, convictions and rights. Tolkien writes about things that he knows and understands. He writes about the importance of a simple life, the cruelties of war and the beauty of nature. He shifts the focus from mundane things, like sex, and takes us on an incredible adventure.
