BERSERK, Casca.
I can’t deal with him right now. He’s such a cinnamon roll!
Oops, I should stop posting while I’m half asleep- here’s a bigger image
Berserk
I painted this for a project... I still like how the result ended up looking.
How can you not get these twisted feels when you see these pages? This chapter pretty much showed the epitome of Guts’ emotional vulnerability through reliving his childhood sexual abuse, something that he never shows to people, not even Griffith. After he spilled all of the beans on his past to Casca, which is already traumatic and embarrassing enough, now he’s worried about how she is going to view him. Is she going to view him as less of a man because something like this happened to him, or just an unstable freak for nearly strangling her and ruining the moment?
She gives him a cool down hug…
… and says that they’re equal…
… and that she’s needs - nay, HAS - to stay with him.
Don’t you see how fucking important this moment is you guys?! Not only is this a big step in Guts’ recovery, but it also reflects the real life implications of people who have lived through childhood sexual abuse: most people never confide with their intimate partners about this stuff, especially guys because of the stigma that men/boys don’t get raped or that they take it better.Do you not see why Guts is so devoted to this woman now?!?! Why he’s got so fucked up after the eclipse!?!?
Dammit, Miura!! You always get to me!!
One of the reasons this scene didn’t work quite as well in the 90s anime was the axing of Guts’ childhood rape. Guts comes off as much less vulnerable in the anime.
I get why they cut it, and still made a couple of subtle efforts to allude to it at key points, but it is a bit disappointing it wasn’t included.
Yeah. They kinda did the same thing in the movies. I mean, I really liked how they did the love scene in the movie (it was pretty gratifying, if you know what I mean) but I much rather prefer the original because why would you show a flashback of Guts getting raped and never have Guts address or be really affected by it when it was such a pivotal moment in his life?
Actually, they were pretty flimsy with all of the sexual abuse/assault in the films, another example being Griffith and Gennon. Again, I know why they cut shit out, but why are you gonna have all of his boy sex slaves be happy in his company, when in the original Casca quoted them as having “lifeless eyes” out of fear and abuse??!!
I, as a Berserk fan - with Casca being my favorite character - I’m already disgruntled with how she’s depicted and how sexual violence is handled in the original story… Long story short, the few male sexual violence and abuse scenes never show the physical act in depth, but you still feel the full emotional depth of what rape can do to someone (female sexual violence - um, not so much >:/ ). Tbh I have to give the TV show some credit because I think they did the Eclipse in the most fitting way that I would have preferred (and it’s like, they probably did it more out of censorship than out of the art of depicting such a scene with all of the emotion and little of the exploitation).
But back to Guts (and Griffith depending on how you view his scenario), being raped was such a huge emotional turning point in his life and it affected him into his adult years: it affected his outlook on relationships, both platonic and romantic, and shaped his worldviews. Not to mention how Guts and Griffith are once again juxtaposed, this time with how they dealt with their trauma and how Casca was involved with each. It was all very emotionally gratifying to see how they interacted with their own emotions and with Casca (notice how Casca gave the cool down hug to each of them, but Guts and Griffith responded quite differently) and it gave way for a lot more character depth.
I always saw the TV show wanting to deal more with camaraderie and such, which was alright with me, especially since they were slated for 25 episodes. I’m not 100% pleased with how everything is depicted in the original manga, but I do give Miura credit in addressing male sexual violence in a character such as Guts, and I wish both producers and fans would stop erasing that part of Guts’ narrative.
Midlander:”The White Hawk is our savior and God!”
Guts:
Am I the only one thinking casca hasn't connected the moon light boy is her child yet. She somehow figured the boy and the demon child are same. But current casca's memories are muddled and have gaps. I don't think she remember giving birth yet. It happened after she lost her mind. As Elaine she instantly attached to the child and was maternal. She sense his presence whenever he's near in the form of demon child, moon light boy or even in Griffith. But current casca has only clear memories upto eclipse and foggy memories as Elaine. There is a disconnect. Figuring out that she gave birth and why he's not with them, what actually happened to the child to become this way is gonna be her biggest task. Since the child and the eclipse were the core memories hidden in her dreamscape chapters. These are the most challenging things for her to process. Once she figured it out and in full consciousness realize her child is sharing a body with her rapist, she's gonna be shattered.
"Kentarō Miura: I'm also filled with emotion. However, Casca's real problem has started from now on... She herself should analyze, understand and solve what happened to her. She should confront what Griffith or the monsters did"
Figuring out the tragic and horrifying situation of her child going to be one of the biggest problems awaiting her.
Casca still looked like she was sedated or whatever mind control they put her in the previous chapters. Cuz when she actually gain consciousness she starts fighting or trying to escape. New chapter looked like she was wandering mindlessly and got in front of Griffith and pain from the brand caused her to fall into her knees.
Anyway if the story shifting back to falconia, I want to see casca actually gaining consciousness and trying to process everything around her. From the moment her mind was restored the last thing she remembered was going to rescue Griffith. But when she met Guts she remembered griffith's tortured body and eclipse, when she tried to speak with him again she remembered judeau dying. Then next thing gonna be her assault and realizing what happened to her and her child. I don't know how long I have to wait for her to actually get there but I remember miura mentioning that's gonna be her character arc where she herself have to solve her issues.
