remember when laetitia hollard (emma's actress) talked about emma's abusive boyfriend? i keep thinking about it, and the more i do, the more i realise that it explains heaps and heaps of her behavior. her willingness to apologise for everything, being daunted by loud voices and strong leadership figures, pushing through and doing the hard thing even if it's scary, constantly claiming she's fine and not relenting on that standpoint one bit even if she was just held in a headlock by a patient. the biggest moment where i can see this though, is when dana convinces her to go home. she's not a quitter, she got worse from her brothers. did you emma? or was it someone else? she's so adamant on downplaying how hard this day was, how much she struggled, and then she basically begs to stay even longer and help out. yeah, it might just be first day nerves and her just being shy, but knowing that her 'not so great' boyfriend was originally supposed to be part of her story reframes so many of her actions.
