A little update <3

I still read all of your lovely replies! I have not given up on art my friends! I have even started my own webcomic on webtoon! It’s called Seth In Space and it would mean a lot to me if you would support me there! Love you all and happy halloween!!

I’m so happy to tell you all that I’ve made great progress with my mental health!! To genuinely be able to say that I feel happy is so liberating and free! I know a lot of you are still in that dark place. I’m here to say that it does get better. Much better! I still have some tough days but progress is progress! Be kind and gentle to yourselves. I love you all and thank you to everyone who’s supported me over the years!

This is a picture tracking bullet holes on Allied planes that encountered Nazi anti-aircraft fire in WW2.

At first, the military wanted to reinforce those areas, because obviously that’s where the ground crews observed the most damage on returning planes. Until Hungarian-born Jewish mathematician Abraham Wald pointed out that this was the damage on the planes that made it home, and the Allies should armor the areas where there are no dots at all, because those are the places where the planes won’t survive when hit. This phenomenon is called survivorship bias, a logic error where you focus on things that survived when you should really be looking at things that didn’t.

We have higher rates of mental illness now? Maybe that’s because we’ve stopped killing people for being “possessed” or “witches.” Higher rate of allergies? Anaphylaxis kills, and does so really fast if you don’t know what’s happening. Higher claims of rape? Maybe victims are less afraid of coming forward. These problems were all happening before, but now we’ve reinforced the medical and social structures needed to help these people survive. And we still have a long way to go.

This is one of my favorite anecdotes to show how clever rewording of statistics can make them say the opposite of what they mean:

Every time a state makes riding a motorcycle without a helmet illegal, the number of ER patients seriously injured in motorcycle accidents skyrockets. Every single time.

When you phrase it just right, it makes it sound like it’s more dangerous to ride a motorcycle with a helmet than without one. Of course, the reality is that before those laws, those patients were going to the morgue, not the ER.

That also reminds me of a story from world war 1 where the soldiers started to take their helmets off because more soldiers would come back injured while wearing a helmet. That’s because if they didn’t have a helmet they died.

Just found out moose can dive as deep as 20 feet (6m) for aquatic vegetation. Can you imagine like, being a diver, and you’re 20 feet underwater, it’s murky, and you run into a moose

good example of creators keeping their actors in the dark: michael shur not telling manny jacinto, william jackson harper, or jameela jamil the truth about the good place until right before they filmed the scene where it’s revealed, because until that moment, their characters are also completely in the dark and have no idea what’s coming. also note that schur told ted danson before LONG before this, because danson’s character DID know the truth all along, and danson had to know too so he could play the role correctly.

When tech doesn’t get thanked...

I recently went to see a play at a large professional company about three hours from the city I am currently living in.

It was just my mom and I as we like to do a ‘girls trip’ every year to spend time together as my schedule is always consuming me and I don’t really have any free time.

So the story:

At intermission I stand up to stretch for a moment and look back at the (very large) booth, make eye contact with the stage manager and give her a smile and wave.

My mom then asks: Do they thank tech in curtain call here?

Me: I would hope so.

Intermission ends. We watch the rest of the show curtain call comes, the actors bow, wave to the audience then walk off stage.

Me: Uh, excuse you, director.

Mom: What?

Me: They didn’t thank tech

Mom: Why?

Me: No idea but I’m gonna thank them.

Mom: Please don’t embarrass yourself.

I then turn around and face the booth (mind you there are about three rows of people behind me until you hit the booth).

I start clapping and making the little heart sign with my hands.

A few audience members look at me confused then look back at the booth.

Audience member: Oh there’s a crew member back there.

Me: Yeah that’s the stage manager, the show does not run without her.

Audience member: Do you know her?

Me: No, but she deserves and applause too.

Audience member: Ah, *Walks away*

Mom: Are you done? Can we go get desert and a drink now?

Me: No.

I then proceeded to go to every crew member I could find cleaning up and thanked them telling them they deserved to be thanked in curtain call. They all quietly agreed.

As I was leaving, I filled out a little comment card.

That said: “At the director: Thank your tech in curtain call! It doesn’t matter if some of the audience won’t understand the gesture, but it is incredibly rude to not thank your crew and tech in curtain call. It ruined the show for me.”

My mom saw what I was doing and insisted I not fill out the card but I did. They’re anonymous anyway.

If I go to a theatre and they don’t thank tech in curtain call. I will make a small scene.

Thank. Tech.

unpopular opinion but i think the film and tv industries should have better labor laws even if it makes it harder or impossible to depict certain things

Okay I know this is about acting and people are getting more traction about it (sexuality safety coordinators are a job! yell about them. demand your shows get them) but

Any person who has worked on a set for more than a few years has at least one person they know who died.  

Not usually on set, but afterwards.  Because we don’t have anyone shutting down production for unsafe practices when “unsafe” means 16 hour days.  Or more.  For weeks.  Finishing a day before hour 12 (not including lunch) is considered an early leave.

I had teachers tell us not to, unless we absolutely had to, take music video gigs because they’ll work you for 24 hours and send you to drive home.  And if we had to work that, pull over and nap in our car because multiple people per year fall asleep at the wheel and go over the canyons around LA.

I know you mean acting but please.  Don’t forget the crew.  We have a shockingly high rate of suicide because these working schedules leave us with no sleep, no time outside of work, and it destroys lives, relationships, and families.  Burnout is high.  Chronic illness and broken bodies are common.  Cocaine use in order to get through a 20 hour day is rampant.  Every single one of your reality shows is fueled by cocaine.

The number of days that are scheduled to shoot a feature has shrunk dramatically in the past two decades.  Which means longer days.

Netflix shows are notorious for being poorly organized, understaffed, and long days.

There are labor laws but what they do is levy fines.  Those fines are either factored into budget, people are bullied into not reporting actual hours, or crew members see them as incentive to take those jobs because more money and cost of living is high.  (Also this industry has a crew culture of dick measuring by sticking your wang in a blender and boasting about how many 100 hour weeks you pulled.)
