A Pirate By Any Other Name | Sybil & Dmitrei
For once in her life, Sybil Grancourt found herself sincerely wishing that she had been left to rot in the damp and cold of the Aragothi dungeons.
The young woman groaned a little under her breath, tugging at the stiff skirts and scratchy collar of the dress some barely-grown maid had shoved in her hands before locking her in this blasted cellar room. All because some damned--what had he called himself?--counselor or whatever he was, had recognized Sybil for who she ‘truly was’.
“Bastard.” She muttered, crossing her arms and staring out the window of her only slightly more elegant prison. Anyone who knew anything knew that she was no longer the Countess of Grancourt. That woman had died five years ago and was never coming back.
Of course, her father had never given up hope that she still lived somewhere out in the world. “Captured, no doubt.” he’d told the whole of Aragoth, she’d learned. “Taken hostage by savages somewhere and held against her will, forced to become their slave.” As if it were beyond his comprehension that she ever would have willingly left the pretty golden cage her father had built for her from the moment she was born. As if she had not been his own slave--primped and prepped to be sold at market to the highest bidders in the land.
Anything would have been preferable to the life she had left behind. And yet here she was--about to be sent back to die a slow and agonizing death.
Sybil turned from the window as she heard the door opening, standing with a start as her heart leapt with the--certainly futile--hope that perhaps it was Godfrey come to whisk them all away. But instead her gaze merely fell upon the vile man that had sent her on this damned path, causing Sybil’s countenance to fall into a sour grimace.
“Ah. The Rat scutters through my doorway once more. How droll. I’d hoped for some more stimulating company today.” She drawled, rolling her eyes and looking back out the window. “Does the High Bitch on her throne know you’ve moved me here? I’d think she’d be rather... displeased to hear you’ve taken a fancy to one of her prisoners.”
For a moment or two longer, Sybil was silent, fingers tapping against the rough fabric of her dress. “You know, my offer still stands.... A thousand gold dragons to set me and my--companions free. We’d just need to sail to the Southern Isles, and you’d be one of the richest men in the Capitol.” Her voice was quiet, just on the edge of pleading, forcing herself not to look at the man who’d managed to ensnare her once again.
OOC | Sysley & Sybil
I’M CERTAIN THESE TWO PROBS NEVER MET, BUT AFTER LOOKING AT UR COMMMENT TO DICCON, ALL I WANT IS A SYSBIL BROTP. NGL.
Sybil getting dragged back to the North after being discovered as y’know not dead, and having to deal with Renfry and the Grancourts, and here’s Sysley like: “sooooooo, you went off to be a pirate eh? exCITING.”
And Sybil just like: ....... *heart eyes* “PLEASE HELP ME LEAVE THIS DAMNED PLACE AGAIN. I MISS MY SHIP AND MY HUSB-BOYFRI-CAPTAI-I MEAN, UH, THE OPEN SEA.”
OOC | Lysander & Sybil
So, both of these ppl are from Great Houses out of Blaminster, so there’s the possibility that they knew each other, yeah? After he turned 13 (he’s 29 now), I think he’s been in and out of the North and traveling all around, but he was def there as a kid so yeah idk????? He’s def the most minor of the minor Staffords bc he’s the seventh son of the seventh son, hence having to get a job to support himself in the west, but yeah hahahaha but anyway, they both at least had ~status growing up, yeah?
Yeah! I mean, he’s four years older than her, so there’s def a possibility they’d have known each other, as Sybil didn’t leave until five years ago.
Plus Sybil’s the only child of the Grancourt line, so idk if that’d affect whether or not they’d be around each other bc ~difference in status bc she’s the first born of her family versus him being 7th of the 7th?????
I think as a kid she would have enjoyed him, though, esp since she was always a fan of adventure stories, and I feel like they would have shared that interest? Plus I think Sybil was kind of a lonely kid, didn’t get out much, so she would have liked to have Lysander around.
OOC | Lucian & Sybil
Soooo, Sybil took to the seas to avoid marrying his bro. Tbh, I think Lucian is glad he ~didn’t marry her bc she obv wouldn’t have made for a v dutiful bride, if that’s what she did hahaha Still, I think as a child, he appreciated her spark a la [ x ] But now he’s like, ?????????????? Bc piracy is NOT what civilized ppl do but yknow ;DDDDD
AHJAHAHA.
I mean, I feel like there’s potential for a really odd-ball broship between Lucian and Sybil? Like, other than the fact she’s an uncivilized barbarian of a pirate now, I feel like they have some similarities in temperament?
Plus, Sybil def has kept a lot of her courtly ways about her even as a pirate, esp since it’s come in handy talking in circles around other pirates that aren’t her crew???
Hmmm... Tho maybe they were around each other somewhat frequently when she was younger/still at Grancourt beCAUSE of Renfry trying to marry her and how her father was pushing for the engagement? I could see Sybil bring dragged (practically kicking and screaming) to House Moran, and her spending most of her time hiding away in whatever random library/office/den she could find first. Which could possibly also be housing Lucian at the time, but idk if he’d help her or just send for Renfry?????
idk. I just love Lucian a lot and I want him to be impressed with all my ladies. <333
ooc| Sybil & Renfry
DOUCHENUGGET (but actually not sure ther’s a more accurate way to describe Renfry tbh)
So Renfry DEF wanted to marry Sybil and he was v excited about it b/c she was young and beautiful and hey she comes with Grancourt and that is sUPER appealing when you are a second son and yo elder bro is Lucian. But when she LITERALLY BECAME A PIRATE TO AVOID MARRYING HIM, omg Renfry was NOT HAPPY. (idk that he knows she’s a pirate, but running off = still not good.)
This also left him to marry her ~crusty old widowed aunt who is mourning the death of her family and isn’t ANY fun and he’s just sitting around waiting for Sybil’s dad to die, b/c at least her aunt still comes with Grancourt, but it’s NOT AS FUn this WAY GDI sybil.
So, yeah, idk that they have met since she left, especially if she’s avoiding the north to avoid him, but at some point down the line they should meet again BC THAT CONVERSATION IS SOMETHING I NEED.
Oh man, Sybil was probs like the actual worst when he was around tbh, because she already didn’t want to marry any of the crusty old dudes her dad brought around, but like for reals Renfry was the worst of the bunch so obvi was the final choice, bc nothing went well for Sybil until she peaced out. Probably was horribly mean to Renfry and trying basically anything to get him to leave/break it off of his own volition, but, as you said, marrying her was too appealing so she had to run off to avoid marrying him. (plus, y’know, she’d been looking for an excuse.)
#gdisybil being the #gdiarthur of the North. xD Sybil ruining the plans for both Renfry and p much all of Grancourt. (as I’m thinking her family p much only had the title and the land left to their name?? So it was a nice pretty thing to wave in other people’s faces, but it’s a lot of smoke and mirrors? maybe? I’m still not solid on where all the houses stand tbh. but still meant that responsibility to keep the house going was partially on Sybil’s shoulders. and obvi she fucked off to be a pirate instead.)
I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY THESE TWO NEED TO MEET AGAIN, BECAUSE HILARITY. (also slightly invested in a flashback of Renfry and Countess!Sybil bc imagine the ~slow burning hatred.) I’m not sure exactly how plots are going still, (outside of #TeamBeaumont plots, which I know like the back of my hand bc aMAZING) but I could see that with the pirates being captured, Sybil being discovered? Like I’m sure people assume she’s dead by now, but I could also see something where she’s recognized by a guard or someone at the palace, and is sent packing back home? Bc I’m sure everyone’s like: “woAH. PIRATES CAPTURED THIS COUNTESS AND KEPT HER PRISONER FOR FIVE YEARS. HOW TERRIFIED AND SOILED SHE MUST BE, POOR THING. WE MUST SEND HER HOME.... and demand a reward i meaaaannn....”
I fail to fully comprehend how far we, the Whig party that is, are fully committed to the concept of freedom. - We intend to extend the vote. To all men? - Heavens, no. But certainly to more men. Freedom in moderation.
Pirates don’t die. They simply find a prize worth chasing into eternity.

ooc| Sybil & Renfry
Sybil all like: "..........why do you even still exist?? Also Ew to infinity squared."
Sybil trying to tell her crew that the North is off-limits partially bc uh, going home isn't an option anymore and two, HELL NAW IS SHE GONNA RUN INTO THIS DOUCHENUGGET.
ooc| to be deleted
can we plz get silly nicknames for all of them?
I’m so here for sparkly disco lizard.
i’m dying.
Avelina has a nickname for Lynessa all picked out: Queen of Aragoth ;DDDDD No, but in all srsness I will think on these. Also, do you think they have any ~ic epithets~ a la GoT w/ The Kingslayer etc????
I feel like Cassius is The Dragonslayer tbh
I feel like the pirates might?
I'm so tempted for Godfrey to be The Dread Pirate Godfrey and maybe Sybil is like... idk, The Pirate Queen or The Crossbone Duchess or something??
I'm not sure yet what James' would be, but I bet he'd have one too.
I think it’d be rather exciting to meet a pirate.
#pirates of the caribbean was kind of a formative influence #and nothing about these movies so much as her—snarling selfish sea-hungry pirate king #sometimes I rewatch the first movie and laugh to myself about how little it understood her and will; how it tried to convince us #that will was the pirate because he was chasing after her; and pirates are obsessed with treasure #when elizabeth spends the first movie chasing freedom and the next two chasing him; chasing her freedom; chasing war; chasing the world #her wedding was interrupted and she held the man responsible at gunpoint until he gave her letters of pardon #she was mistaken for a sea goddess and accepted it without question; she led an army to war as though it were her due #and she did it all without ever apologizing for the lives she takes or the lies she tells and when she betrays sparrow with a kiss #he hisses ”pirate” because what else could she be

Name: Sybil Grancourt ♦ - (Keira Knightley) - from Pirates of the Caribbean ♦ Age: (25) ♦ Relationships: (Captain:) Godfrey LeFey, (shipmate:) Valery, (former shipmate:) James Garin ♦ Description: Sybil was once a Countess, but fled home after she was being forced into a loveless marriage with a man three times her age. Sybil met Godfrey LeFey when she was trying to buy a passage away to sea. Although he laughed at her request and threatened to take her back to her family for the reward they promised, he was oddly impressed by her and now, five years later, she is his first mate. TAKEN BY LAUREN.
Occupation: First Mate on the Revenge
History/Family Information: Life as the only child of the Grancourt name was never easy for Sybil. Born a woman instead of a man, she provided no comfort for a widow saddled with all of the gambling debts of a philandering husband. Not to mention that their once proud name had been soiled by the fact that her father had been killed in a duel over the honor of some local duke’s daughter. Her family in ruins, but still a member of the realm at least by name, Sybil’s mother began to devise a plan for how to revitalize their social standing.
In other words, Sybil Annalise Grancourt was to be put up for public auction. Of course, no one ever spoke of it in such terms, but Sybil knew a meat market when she saw one. At the tender age of seventeen she was paraded throughout society, presented to every single bachelor with money and a title one the face of the kingdom. It was horrible. All of those men leering at her, kissing her hands, not even pretending that they would listen to a single word she said. For years Sybil resisted, refusing every single offer of marriage that came her way or finding some way to debase herself so that the men broke their engagements. It worked quite well, if Sybil could say as much herself.
That is, until Lord Renfry Moran appeared. Sybil had newly turned twenty years old, and at the small party her mother threw in order to attract the few remaining suitors that hadn’t already heard stories of the Grancourt shrew in angel’s garb, the two were introduced. He was at least sixty years old, apparently extremely wealthy after finding a stretch of gold that had yet to be tapped, and a widower to boot. Mother was all in a twitter as she heard him loudly complaining about how much disrepair his estate had fallen into these past few years without a feminine touch to spruce it all up. That he’d give half of his riches just to have it all set to rights again.
The papers were signed nearly the next day. So Sybil quickly set to her usual tricks, temper tantrums, disagreements, staged ‘trysts’ with stable boys whom she had grown up with, anything to get him to leave. Yet the old man only ever laughed at her, shrugging to himself and saying that Moran could use a young spirit among its halls… “And between its sheets” he’d whispered in her ear one night before kissing her hand and taking his leave.
That night Sybil packed a bag and ran as far away from home as she could. Perhaps she only had a few gold coins to her name, but surely it would be enough to buy her passage somewhere far, far away. She had always enjoyed examining her father’s old atlases and reading stories of adventure upon the high seas. It had sounded so glamorous. Surely a life on the sea or across it would be better than a life trapped within a golden cage.
Yet as Sybil wandered the docks, her reticule held tight to her chest, none seemed to be willing to take her. Each captain turned her down, shuffling their feet and looking away as she held out her few coins, saying that she’d go anywhere. It didn't matter. “It’s bad luck, miss… Fearful luck to have wimmens aboard.” Exhausted as the night dragged on, Sybil nestled herself among some barrels on a flat, pulling her bonnet tight over her eyes and deciding she’d try again in the morning to find some passage far away.
Instead, the girl was rudely awakened by a bucket of cold, brackish water poured over her head by a man dressed all in black with eyes that sparkled in the bright morning sun. “Well, well, what do we have here? A pretty little stowaway, hmm? We’re not much for stowaways aboard the Revenge now are we, boys?”
“Please… Please.” She had sputtered, fumbling for her bag of coins. “I merely wish passage. Anywhere. It doesn't matter.”
The man she would soon come to know as Godfrey LeFey had laughed in her face, saying that he knew who she was and that if he had any sense, he’d take her measly bag of coins then send her packing back home for the rest.
“No! Please! I beg of you… I’ll do anything to keep from going back there… Anything.”
And thus Sybil Grancourt, once a Countess of the highest degree, found herself aboard the pirate ship Revenge as a cabin boy. Every night Godfrey would tell her he’d surely send her home in the morning, but every day he’d give her yet another responsibility. On and on it went for a few years until finally he named her First Mate…
And there was no more talk of sending her home.
Personality: Though Godfrey may like to think of himself as the most charismatic person aboard the Revenge, Sybil has given the man quite a run for his money. Perhaps it had taken her a few months to get her sea legs and become used to life aboard a pirate ship, but she thrived there--far more so than she ever did playing her part as Countess on the Courtly stage. Here she can laugh loudly, drink deeply and swear more vilely than ever before, though she still retains that courtly edge. She has played the game of intrigue from the moment she was born, and it takes a great master to fool Sybil Grancourt.
But even a steely heart and a keen eye cannot always keep a woman safe when she is sailing the high seas. Sybil learned early on that she was the only one who would be able to take care of her, and so has learned to defend herself in any way possible. She has a code of allowing a man three chances to remember to hold his tongue… After that, she gets to cut it out of his mouth and keep it for herself. Sybil learned to fight and to be good at it as quickly as possible, to learn how to intimidate a man who has had a bit too much rum in his system, how to use their momentum against them.
Sybil may be a woman, but she is a force to be reckoned with. Easily set to anger, ready to fight at the drop of a hat, and will always, always win. Her emotions are as reckless as the sea, and just as changeable. But what else could she do? A girl has to survive.
Goals/Hopes for the Future: To be honest, Sybil is quite content with her life as it is. Life out at sea is exciting, and every day is an adventure. She is free here, never tied down by anything or anyone. As long as she wishes to stay, she stays. Though perhaps she wishes for a more concrete reason to feel attached to the ship—a reason just the shape and size of a certain Captain—she knows that her life here is better than any she could have had if she had stayed on land.
Romantic Life: Love had never really been a part of the picture for Sybil. She had been born and raised to be sold to the highest bidder. Yes she had longed for it, as every little girl did when she read her fairy tales, but Sybil had never thought she’d actually find it. Nor did she think it would be found somewhere as unlikely as a pirate ship she accidentally stowed away upon.
Godfrey LeFey was her weakness, it was true. Sybil hated herself for loving him, truly, for what was the point in loving a pirate? Especially one as uncaring and full of himself as Godfrey. Yes, indeed, they were attracted to each other—as their somewhat frequent tumbles in bed would suggest—but there was never to be anything more between them. Or at least nothing they could speak of.
This was partially for business reasons, of course. Already some of the crew were murmuring that Sybil had slept her way to the top of the ship, her eyes too full with the glimmer of the First Mate share of the spoils. It was also partially for her own safety. Once before Sybil had nearly killed a man after he insisted that if the Captain got to have a go at the ship whore, they might as well all get their turns.
But, if Sybil were to be honest with herself, she kept her distance from Godfrey as well because she was afraid. No man in her life had ever truly loved her, and as far as she knew, love was something someone had made up for her story books. After all, her father had never loved her mother as his string of affairs came to show. And the men who were all to marry her were only looking for titles and land that they believed was worth something. Who was to say that Godfrey would be any different? So instead she teases and baits and harasses her Captain, taking the nights that she can and locking her heart away into the most buried of treasure chests.
