                                 stubborn  .  it  is  a  trait  that  stayed  with  him  ,  cultivated  long  before  the  serum  had  entered  his  system  .  bull  headed  ,  that's  what  his  ma  used  to  say  ,  and  she  was  right  .  she  is  still  right  .  it  is  difficult  ,  a  tinge  in  his  chest  every  time  she  enters  a  room  .  he's  never  said  a  word  of  it  to  anyone  ,  but  that  does  not  prevent  the  captain  from  tightening  his  jaw  and  avoiding  her  gaze  .  (  he  had  trusted  her  .  he's  trusted  many  --  how  many  times  will  people  break  that  ?  why  did  hers  sting  like  salt  on  a  fresh  wound  ,  even  now  ?  )  steve  does  not  expect  her  to  approach  .
