"Just to make something clear - I don't respond to @'s about the Magnus Archives from listeners, at all, and I haven't for the last 6 months or so. There are a few reasons for this:

Firstly, the volume makes it unfeasible. At TMA's height I was receiving over 100 @'s about it a day, and even now it's generally a few dozen. Given I'm not on this hellsite very much anymore, I simply don't have the time to engage with them most days.

Second, the fandom is still quite a volatile place and last couple of times I did reply to @'s from folks within it they ended up getting harassed quite severely. I'm not willing to put anyone in that position again.

And Thirdly, the show is complete. I have no power to change it, and nothing I could have to say about it would have any effect on the text. You have questions for me? You have as much access to the text as I do - nothing I could say would carry any canonical weight.

So much for the questions. As for the criticisms - at this point I have very much heard them. The most egregious I have made my apologies for already and those others I have taken on board to try and learn from for my future writing.

But I have no interest in performative remorse, or making individual apologies to every new listener who discovers my first major writing gig was messy and sometimes problematic and feels they need to @ me about it.

We’re handwaving ‘’Jon and Martin’s bodies weren’t found’’ as some kind of mild kindness Jonny had towards the most hopeful of us and not a legitimate writing decision with full intent and purpose. 

Like, I understand being cynical because we’ve repeated outselves ‘’TMA is a tragedy’’ to death but tragedy doesn’t ultimately means death-game-of-thrones-style. Yes, they could very well be dead but TMA has a history of ‘’no body = no proof of death’’ and the fact that the hope that they’re alive, the hope they had and the hope Georgie, Melanie and Basira stay with, the hope we stay with means something thematically and it’s undeniably a part of the story, not a last minute fix so the ending isn’t so bloody.

Yes, we’re left with grief. Grief, guilt and anger. It shouldn’t have been like this. People shouldn’t have to die and suffer for someone else to live. People shouldn’t cradle their loved ones close in a desperate embrace. Georgie, Melanie and Basira shouldn’t have to rebuild. shouldn’t have to grieve their friends. Jon and Martin shouldn’t have been forced to do what they did. Grief that maybe they’re dead and no one will ever know it. Grief that if they died, they did it because any other alternative was unbearable. The solutions (’’pass it on’’ or ‘’kill this world and the fears once and forever’’) were utter shit. No one should have to make that choice. No one should have to die, not like this. It hurts.

But we’re left with hope, too. It means something. It means as much as the grief. We leave sad and grieving about the high price that was paid but we also leave with the conviction there’s hope. Even when everything’s crumbling down, hope prevails. Hope that Basira, Georgie and Melanie will see the rebuild of a better world. Hope that Jon and Martin aren’t dead (or, at least, that their possible deaths aren’t meaningless). Hope that these worlds that now have the fears trickling at the corners, these new worlds that will be invaded with foreign systems they didn’t choose will fight back. 

That’s humanity, isn’t it? That’s this story. We acknowledge the pain and hope for the best.

Something something even if the "can I have a cigarette?" line was intentional, I don't think it would mean something sinister. The line is originally so unsettling because it is such a mundane and human gesture. It is an act of asking for someone else to reach out and give kindness, and the anglerfish inherently corrupts that kindness. So for Georgie to ask for a cigarette, it brings back that original meaning. Instead of the sinister version we've come to know, we're back to its base intentions, asking for kindness between two people. Something so human in this corrupted world.

This one is tall, with short, curly blond hair and pale skin. Its eyes are like twin suns, brilliant and terrible.

“Hello,” it says in a voice like the sea, in that it destroys boats, reefs, and small island nations. “It’s been a long time.” It smiles, mouth iridescent and full of perfect teeth. The Vast always smiles like that.

“I missed you,” says the other, tentative, grasping its hand.

“I missed me as well,” says the Vast. “I have so much to tell you. It’s amazing, really.”

besides jon's choice to live at the beginning of s4 the other thing that Never leaves my brain about tma is georgie's run-in with Death and how it's a metaphor for the way depression just. Steals whole emotions or aspects of your life and then you have to work around that gap and sometimes you have conflicting feelings about it. If you lie in bed for months and then wake up one day with your fear just torn out of you is that a wound or are you whole again? Is fear something you just didn't need? If a part of you is at peace now, then can it really be a bad thing, should you miss it, do you have the emotional ability to miss a feeling you can't experience anymore?
