Short version; no, "phone addiction" and "social media addiction" aren't real. Obviously it's possible to overuse them in unhealthy ways, but that's true of practically anything enjoyable. Checking your phone isn't going to give you brain damage.

The only reference backing up any of this scaremongering is an article on phone addiction from "Addiction Center"; an internet marketing website which takes commission from forwarding people onto paid services. There are four(!) referral links Better Help embedded in the article. This is not an unbiased source.

It does include citations, but the sources are either spurious or nonexistent. The research they reference on how phone usage causes brain damage isn't linked, for example, but after finding the paper it's based on an inconclusive study of 19 children. The other papers cited found depression and anxiety correlate with phone usage, but only correlation not causation.

I think the problem is people are using "addiction" where it doesn't really make sense. Whether or not you spend a majority of your time on social media depends on your personal life and not just your phone.

When I was reclusive and severely depressed for a few years my screen time was probably like 12 hours a day. I have the same phone now that I did then but my screen time is down because I'm more proactive in my life. If someone appears addicted to their phone it's probably because whatever is going on there is better than their real life. And in this case the problem remains with and without the phone

hey, biting correctly can be tricky to master! and some vampires don’t have a relationship with their sire where they feel comfortable asking for advice. when i was turned, my sire was my former master and it took awhile to feel like i could talk to her freely. plus, most fledglings are abandoned by their sires these days. i think it’s great that these babybats have a place to figure these things out.

tip to all the babybats: if you feel you’re not getting enough blood you probably aren’t sucking hard enough. you gotta really work at it. it takes time to build up the muscles to drain someone within minutes. and if you really want to puncture an artery go right ahead, just prepare for things to get messy haha (and don’t expect your victim to live through it)

I can't stop thinking about the students who couldn't attend school over the past year. So many of them genuinely love to study, love to learn, and love to be with their fellow classmates and teachers. Now they are in their tents as the rain pours down. Ahed Al-Shaer (@ahedalshaer) is one of the many students whose education has been halted. She is a student at the famous Al-Azhar University and she is in her final year, getting ready to get her degree in dentistry. have y'all seen how many posts poll-then-donation-request posts receive thorough poll engagement, while the actual notes are left hanging? i'm talking 12k votes for "favorite japanese dish?" but only 1500 who felt like being minimally kind to a stranger they had power over. when i see numbers like that i wonder: do the people who skip past once they realize they're being asked for something think they're outsmarting a trick? does the triumphancy of that avoidance feel better than the humility of kindness?
