“Tsukki!” Yamaguchi Tadashi called out his best friend’s nickname, jogging to the spot outside of the school where they usually ate lunch. His chestnut brown eyes were sparkling in the light of the sun yet also out of his own excitement, and his hair flew upwards as he ran because of the cool spring breeze that was passing through the air. He was out of breath as he sat down on the grass beside his friend, panting lightly as he leaned his back against the bark of the tree behind him before beginning to speak. “You’ll never guess what just happened!”
“What happened?” Tsukishima asked, not even bothering to take a guess. He tried to make himself seem as disinterested as possible by fiddling with the two cords on his headphones, which he had brought down to rest on his neck upon his friend’s arrival, but it was hard to hide the look of nervousness on his pale face as he wondered why his best friend was in a more upbeat mood than usual.
He just hoped that it wasn’t what he thought it was, but he knew that this day would eventually come.
“I did it! I asked [Y/N] out.”
Tsukishima’s golden brown eyes widened in shock at his friend’s words despite the fact that he wasn’t surprised, and he felt his heart seemingly stop beating in his chest.
“And?” Tsukishima clenched his jaw, his voice so low that it almost came out as a whisper, yet there was no use in asking. Based on the boy’s bouncy demeanour and radiant smile, Tsukishima already knew what his answer would be.
“And we’re going on a date this Saturday!“ the freckled boy finished his statement before letting out a breathy sigh of relief. “Can you believe it?”
Tsukishima wanted make a sarcastic comment about how he couldn’t, yet the swirling feeling in his stomach stopped him before the words could even reach the tip of his tongue. It was the same feeling that he got whenever he saw Yamaguchi staring at you in a dream-like state when you weren’t looking, whenever he’d see the freckled boy’s lips curl up into a bright grin just at the mention of your very name. Tsukishima wasn’t stupid — he had been able to recognize what that sickening, swirling sensation in his stomach was from the moment he first felt it.
Jealousy.
“Congrats,” Tsukishima muttered in a bitter tone that wasn’t at all congratulatory, yet his best friend was too ecstatic to notice. Yamaguchi was staring up at the sky in a daze, completely lost in the white wisps of clouds that glided slowly but surely across the endless vast of blue sky above him. The boy was clearly still in disbelief about the fact that you, [Y/N] [L/N], actually liked him back.
“Thanks Tsukki,” Yamaguchi smiled, still staring up at the sky, completely oblivious to the turmoil unfolding inside the mind of the blond boy beside him.
Tsukishima’s eyes were fixated on the ground — he couldn’t bear to even look in his best friend’s direction. There was always a pleasant feeling that fluttered inside of Tsukishima’s chest whenever he saw Yamaguchi smile, yet there was nothing pleasant or fluttery about the feeling that ached within his heart upon seeing his best friend beam at the thought of being with someone else, the thought of being with someone who wasn’t him.
“But seriously,” Yamaguchi continued, snapping Tsukishima out of his thoughts. “If I would’ve known that [Y/N] liked me back after all this time, I would’ve confessed a long time ago.”
There it was again — the swirling feeling of jealousy in Tsukishima’s stomach, the piercing feeling of pain in his chest. In that moment, all the blond boy wanted was for his best friend to stop talking, for him to stop even mentioning your name. Yet Yamaguchi continued to speak, and it was as though his simple words were fumes that Tsukishima’s lungs couldn’t handle, setting fire to the blond boy’s heart and suffocating him with every breath he took.
“I just can’t believe that everyone else noticed that [Y/N] liked me back before I did,” Yamaguchi continued. “I mean, everyone’s saying that it was obvious, but I didn’t even know until I made the first move. Maybe I’m just oblivious.”
Tsukishima internally agreed with that statement. Yamaguchi Tadashi was, in fact, oblivious. He was oblivious to the fact that while he was twirling the grass below him in his fingers, Tsukishima was unconsciously clenching it in his fists. He was oblivious to the fact that while every breath of air felt so fresh and calming to him, no amount of air could settle the burning sensation inside of his best friend’s lungs. He was oblivious to the fact that while his heart was overwhelmed with joy, the heart of the seemingly numb blond beside him was slowly breaking to pieces.
“You sure are,” Tsukishima said dryly, but Yamaguchi dismissed it as one of his best friend’s usual sarcastic comments and chuckled lightly in response.
It had always been obvious to Tsukishima that you and Yamaguchi would eventually get together. It was obvious when Yamaguchi slowly stopped walking with him to class in favour of walking with you instead, leaving the blond boy to roam the halls alone. It was obvious when you two would shyly flirt with each other without realizing it, leaving Tsukishima with a bitter taste in his mouth and a stomach that was churning in jealousy.
It had always been obvious, yet just because it was obvious didn’t mean that it hurt any less.
“So, where do you think we should go? I thought that the movies would be fun, but is that too plain? Maybe I could take…”
Tsukishima bit his lip, attempting to drown out the sound of Yamaguchi planning out your date with the thoughts inside of his own head. It was almost as though his best friend was taunting him as he spoke about the date so casually, as if the boy knew that Tsukishima so desperately wanted to be in your place, to be going on the date with him instead.
“What do you think, Tsukki?” Yamaguchi tapped Tsukishima lightly on the shoulder to grab his attention, unbeknownst to the fact that his sudden touch had sent shivers down the blond boy’s spine. “The movies, ice cream, dinner, or something else?”
“What do I think?” Tsukishima repeated, trying to keep his voice even despite the desperate answers that were racing through his mind.
“I think you should choose something else,” he thought to himself.
“I think you should choose someone else.”
“I think you shouldn’t go.”
“Huh…what do you mean I shouldn’t go?” Yamaguchi’s eyes widened in surprise, and Tsukishima’s heart stopped in his chest when he realized that he had accidentally muttered his last thought out loud.
Tsukishima decided to remain silent in the hopes that the boy would forget about what he had just said, yet although Yamaguchi could be a pushover sometimes, he wasn’t going to let that slide so easily.
“You know, you’ve been acting really weird, Tsukki,” Yamaguchi frowned, furrowing his eyebrows in concern before his eyes widened in a moment of realization. “Wait a second…do you like [Y/N] or something? Is that why y—”
“I don’t like [Y/N] like that,” Tsukishima interrupted the boy.
“Then why are you being so—”
“I like you,” the words had slipped past Tsukishima’s tongue before he even had the time to process that he was saying them, leaving both of the boys in a stunned silence.
“You…y-you what?” Yamaguchi finally stuttered after a couple of seconds, his eyes widening in shock as a rosy pink blush settled on his freckled cheeks.
“You heard what I said…” Tsukishima muttered, staring at the overgrown grass beneath him to avoid meeting the boy’s wary gaze.
“Tsukki, I…” Yamaguchi sighed, biting his bottom lip hesitantly. “I used to like you.”
Tsukishima’s breath hitched at the words ‘used to’. He felt his airway tighten as his heart burned in his chest, his mind that always seemed to be racing and over-analyzing things finally turning blank.
“I used to like you for a long time…ever since we were kids,” Yamaguchi continued, his words only fueling the fire in Tsukishima’s heart. “B-but then I met [Y/N], and I…I got over it.”
‘Got over it’. If words had the power to kill, Tsukishima Kei would be dead by now, because that simple phrase stabbed him right in the back.
“I never thought that you liked me back…you were always so cold and dismissive, and it…” Yamaguchi trailed off hesitantly, before gaining the courage to speak again. “It hurt me.”
Tsukishima’s eyes widened at the boy’s confession. He would have never thought that his best friend had taken his cold, dismissive demeanour to heart, that it had been affecting him all this time despite him not showing it one bit. Tsukishima had thought that Yamaguchi was the oblivious one, but maybe he was the oblivious one after all.
“Tsukki…I’m sorry. I’m going out with [Y/N] now, and even though a part of me still li—”
“No, I’m sorry,” Tsukishima interrupted the boy as he got up from his spot on the grass, dusting the dirt off his pants hastily. His golden eyes had started to water against his will, and he looked away from the boy to hide the fact that he looked like he was ready to crumble at any moment. “I shouldn’t have said anything in the first place.”
“Tsukki, wait!” Yamaguchi called after the boy, but it was too late. Tsukishima had already started walking away, and he had no intention of turning back. A cool spring breeze tousled Tsukishima’s short blond hair as he walked away, and the bright light of the sun only seemed to make his eyes glisten even more.
Tsukishima walked to the front of the school, quickening his strides to get away from his lunch spot as fast as he could, and he was about to open the door to go inside when someone else swung it open.
That ‘someone else’ was you.
“Hey, Tsukishima,” you smiled as you walked outside, still overjoyed about what had happened earlier. “Have you seen Tadashi? He told me he was…Tsukishima, are you okay?”
It was impossible for you not to notice that Tsukishima’s golden eyes were glistening with tears, which were just on the verge of finally being released. Although you had only met Tsukishima this year, you knew that the blond boy was mostly unfazed by everything, so something bad must have happened for him to be reduced to a state like this.
“No,” Tsukishima muttered bluntly, looking away from you as a lone tear finally slipped out the corner of his eye and made its way down his cheek. “I’m not okay.”
“What’s wr—”
“Maybe it’s better that he found someone else…” Tsukishima interrupted you, finally meeting your gaze.
“What are you talking ab—”
“Be good to him,” Tsukishima cut you off again as he swung open the door and walked inside the school, and it was only when he found an isolated spot in the hallway that he could allow himself to lean back against the wall and slump down to the ground, burying his head in his arms.
