@jegulus-microfic February 28, Word count 1,355
This is it. The final part. I'm so emotional right now. I honestly can't believe how long this thing ended up being. It was only meant to be 3 or 4 parts, but somehow turned into 455 parts altogether.
I've been through some really tough times this last year and a bit, but I always had this Jegulus to take me away from it all. I'm going to be lost without it.
I just want to thank everyone who has stuck around for this and those only just finding it, your continued love made my day every heart at a time.
I will be putting this entire saga up on Ao3 in one place, probably not all at once 🤣, and I'll post the link for anyone who wants to go back to the beginning.
I love you all and thank you again.
“You are coming, aren’t you?” James asked Regulus through the mirror. He’d had to literally prise it from Sirius’s grasp to get it, but he’d given it to Regulus after the first time work had taken him from home.
“Yes, James, I’ve packed a bag, I’ve got my book and my eye mask,” Regulus said, rolling his eyes.
“Why do you need those?” James asked, confused as to why his husband would need an eye mask.
“Well, Quidditch matches are very dull when your husband is the best player, and if he’s on the team, then there’s no point watching, as we all know who’s going to win.”
“IT’S THE WORLD CUP FINAL!!!” James yelled in utter disbelief. The sly smirk on Regulus’s face made him scowl. He’d been winding him up, again.
“Remember the portkey is at 6:23 am exactly,” James reminded his husband as they said their goodbyes.
“Yes, yes, we’ll be there,”
James received another eye roll for that one.
“Can I see him?” James asked, quieter now.
Regulus rose and moved about their house until he opened a door into a dark room. James’s view changed, and he was looking into a little bed with a mop of raven-black hair poking out of the top. He grinned as he watched his son sleeping peacefully.
Regulus didn’t linger, quietly closing the door behind him.
“Right, you’ve seen him, now bugger off, some of us have to get up early to travel halfway across the world to see their idiot husband show off on his broomstick,”
“Love you too. See you tomorrow,” James blew Regulus a kiss, and Regulus’s image disappeared to be replaced by his own. He needed to get some sleep, but the thought of seeing Regulus and Harry in a few short hours made that nearly impossible. He forced himself to, though, he couldn’t show off if he was tired after all.
Regulus woke, groaning at the early hour and silently cursing his husband for being such a damn good Quidditch player.
“Time to get up, baby, we’re going to go see Daddy fly, remember?” Harry was even less of a morning person than Regulus was, but other than that, he was the spit of James. Well, apart from his grey eyes, those were all Regulus.
“No,” Harry grumbled, tugging the cover back over his head. Regulus sighed and firmly tugged the cover off and gathered their two-year-old into his arms. He quickly dressed Harry in something more appropriate for travel, put their shrunken bags in his pocket and carried Harry outside.
James had arranged for a portkey for the pair of them, but due to their home’s remote, hidden location, Regulus would have to walk until they were outside of the magical barriers.
He found the old tin of baked beans in the exact place he’d been told it would be and gingerly picked it up. He grabbed Harry’s little hand and placed it on the bottom of the tin, away from the sharp edges at the top and waited. They had a minute until they’d be whisked away to Italy for the Quidditch World Cup Final. Regulus had been to all James’s matches, of course; he always did. Monty gave him the time off because he couldn’t very well refuse Regulus when he himself would be going, not that he ever would.
“Hold on tight, darling,” Regulus reminded his son as the portkey activated, and they were whizzed away.
James bounced on the balls of his feet as he impatiently waited for their arrival. He checked his watch over and over again, until, with a soft thump, his husband landed in front of him with their toddler in his arms.
“Daddy!!!” Harry called excitedly, holding out his arms and reaching for James.
“Hi, baby!” James raced forward and took Harry from Regulus’s arms, leaning in for a quick kiss before giving all his attention to his son, who was in the middle of telling him all about the drawing of a dragon he’d drawn yesterday for him.
“Papas got it in his bag,” Harry told him for the second time, and both his parents knew he wouldn’t stop until the drawing was in James’s hand.
“Here,” Regulus said, passing James the drawing.
“I want to give it to him!” Harry demanded, bossy little thing. So, Regulus took it back from James and handed it to Harry, who handed it back to James.
“Wow, this is the most amazing drawing of a dragon I have ever seen!” James gushed. Harry beamed proudly at him. “Shall we go see Uncle Padfoot and Uncle Moony?” James asked and didn’t miss the groan his husband let out over the mention of his brother. James decided to ignore it and walked in the direction of where they’d set up their tents the previous day.
Regulus watched with smug joy as Harry ran right past Sirius’s open arms and crashed into Remus, hugging him around the legs.
“Harry James Potter, you come and hug your favourite Uncle!” Sirius demanded, but Harry refused to budge. “That’s it, I’m divorcing you,” Sirius huffed at Remus.
“It’s not my fault he likes me more,” Remus argued, and they let them to it, he and James sneaking away for some peace and quiet.
“I’ve missed you so much,” James sighed into the side of Regulus’s throat as he kissed his way down his body. He didn’t have long to worship, but he’d be home in a few days, and he would be able to worship Regulus for three months for as long as he wanted.
“I missed you, too,” Regulus moaned as James moved. He picked up the pace; they really didn’t have long. He was expected in the changing rooms in half an hour.
Thankfully, because it had been a few weeks since they’d seen each other, everything went a bit quicker than usual, and they were dressed and walking back out of their tent with five minutes to spare.
“Good luck, Daddy,” Regulus said, waving Harry’s hand as James waved goodbye to them. Fuck it. He had a few minutes to spare. He raced back and kissed the pair of them before high-tailing it to the changing rooms, grinning apologetically to their coach and got ready for his match.
The stands were bursting with spectators. Regulus, luckily, or not so luckily, depending on who you asked, was sitting with a gaggle of people he knew. Sirius, Remus, Effie, Monty, Peter, Lily, Marlene, Mary, Dorcas, Pandora, Barty and Evan. They took up three rows at the very top of the stands. The view was spectacular as they watched the players whizz by.
“Daddy!” Harry shouted every time James raced past them with the quaffle under his arm. They were beating Iceland by 260 points. If that damn seeker would just capture the snitch, the game would be over in time for Harry’s bedtime.
A roar erupted from the other end of the pitch and made its way towards them as that damn England Seeker soared across the pitch with her hand in the air and the golden snitch clasped tightly within.
“Daddy won, baby,” Regulus said into Harry’s ear as the cheering filled the stadium.
James shot towards the stands, hopping off before he crashed into the spectators and made for his family. He lifted his son into the air, cheering with the rest. He settled him on his shoulders and pulled Regulus to him, kissing him for everyone to see.
He pulled away and gazed lovingly down at the love of his life, happier and more in love than he could ever imagine being. And in the end, that’s all that mattered. He’d give up Quidditch altogether if it meant having this happiness and love in his heart forever. He kissed his husband again, took Harry off his shoulders and after carefully sitting him in front of him, took off to do a lap around the pitch, waving with one hand while the other held his tiny son safely against his chest as he thought of finally going home.
