Neil hates his smile so much because he thinks of it as his father's smile. He says it so many times in the books, how he's fighting his father's smile. But what about him discovering his own smile? The smile he has when Nicky tells a stupid joke or when Matt is offering to beat Kevin up for Neil for the nth time. The smile he has when he looks around and sees all the people he considers family in one place? The smile he has when he stares at Andrew, someone he loves and cares for so much he feels like his heart will explode, and he knows Andrew cares the same for him. Just Neil discovering his own smile, separate from the identity of his father.
