FMA Philosopher’s Stones (03 Only, Spoilers)

(Warning: Spoilers for a 15 year old series ahead. Also possibly inaccurate theorizing ahead as well, mostly just spitballing a concept to see if someone can properly disprove this? cause otherwise I’m working with this premise)

I’ve been thinking about the philosopher’s stone in the 03 continuity only, and please correct me if I’m wrong (though it’s just interesting enough that I’d just make an AU where it’s the case)... it doesn’t seem like you even can surpass the exchange rate for bringing souls or bodies back to life with them.

Or in other words, the entire reason Ed and Al searched for it wouldn’t actually make what they want possible

Now, it clearly allows for you to break all the other laws of alchemy and make the world your bitch, but Dante simply used hers to swap souls; it takes a complex array and alchemical talent to do it, but that’s equivalent exchange; 1=1. While Dante’s old lady body was bisected and desecrated, it’s entirely probable that Dante just didn’t want Lyra to live any longer knowing her secrets.

It does allow you to power the swapping array without draining your own life force, in fact, that’s the reason Dante in Lyra’s body was rotting so fast; she didn’t have enough left of the stone to fully facilitate the transfer and it rebounded. But it didn’t actually negate the toll itself, and could be argued, since the souls remained entirely in the same realm, it just eased the toll on her body that such a powerful transmutation would create. It’s possible the Gate never got involved because both participants were still alive and never had to visit Truth.

(Plus, Barry and Numbers 48 prove that it doesn’t take skill to deal with souls and soul bonds, and Edward only traded his arm for the knowledge on how to seal Al’s soul if I remember correctly?)

Rewatching the ending episodes where actual human transmutation takes place, while Alphonse is technically physically the stone and it could explain the fact that his sacrifice 'used up' the stone and therefore himself, it’s also not entirely impossible that it was just Al giving up his soul and body to return Ed to his soul and body. Considering Ed did the exact same thing in return, trading his whole body and soul for Al's body and soul (returned as it was given to the gate) without any extra sacrifice on his part, it seems like the stone didn’t really... do anything? You can access the gate by other manners (How Dante used Rose’s child and how Ed returned to Amestris) and it’s just a tool to let alchemists not risk their lives with costly transmutations

The idea of the philosopher’s stone being limited solely (heh, pun) to the physical realm and facilitating the bypass of the traditional mechanical laws of alchemy and do insane feats, but gaining the reputation as something that could bypass the whole ‘human souls’ thing... strangely fits, especially with some of my... feelings on homunculi in the 03 version... that the only thing you can trade for a soul is a soul.

Yes, it would make their quest useless, but that... isn’t out of the tone of the 03 series?....

If there are MAJOR flaws in this interpretation that I’ve simply forgotten in not rewatching enough episodes, tell me. I still think it’s an interesting take, but I would like to know what in the anime directly contradicts this interpretation.

if there are only minor flaws coming mainly from personal interpretation of certain things (like my belief that soullessness does not exist)*, quibbling is ok but I’m just spitballing my own idea of how stones work for funsies, not for pure accuracy to the source material. I can live with being a little incorrect for cool story premise

* the ONLY soulless thing seen in the series was Nina’s ‘homunculus’, therefore technically, once stable, every homunculus is both possessing of a soul (not the soul of the person who was intended to be resurrected, but a soul) and essentially as human as anyone else. Strange powers aside, they’re as human as they need to be.

Rewatching the 03FMA anime because I’ve hear a lot of people say it’s actually better than brotherhood, and I personnally don’t exactly remember what I disliked about, precisely. Like there’s a few things I suppose were the resaon :

-The manga had a theme, tone and characters that really resonated with me, but I didn’t find that in the 03 anime

-I think I remember not being all that jazzed about the anime’s reatment of women, even back then.

-I also remember a lot of unnecessary romo drama and unrequited love shenanigans, which I really don’t care for.

-It was bleak and hopeless. Like, not just sad, sad I can deal with, but just... miserable. Also inconclusive ? I don’t remember.

So we’ll se if any of these are accurate or not and if I still dislike it.

Personally, I really liked Dante in 03, and I felt she didn't get the appreciation she deserved as a villain.

I don't understand how some people are satisfied with the ending to 03fma???? Like??? Damn why y'all want those boys to suffer so much. Personally I think the ending to fma:b is so much more structured, well thought out and just... good. And happy. THOSE BOYS DESERVE TO BE HAPPY OKAY. Also Hiromu Arakawa is a goddess and her work is incredible.
