HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Frank Allen (The Searchers), Jane Birkin, Dave Brubeck Quartet’s 1952 TIME OUT album, Patty Duke, Felix the Cat, Spike Jones, Abbe Lane, John Lurie, Jackie McAuley (Them), Natascha McElhone, Nostradamus, Christopher Parkening, Cecil Payne, Lee Remick, Respighi’s “Pines of Rome,” Charlie Rich, Joaquin Zamacois Soler, Maria Szymanowska, choreographer June Taylor, Clark Terry, Peter “Spider” Tracy, guitar hero Dick Wagner, Viola Wells, Leo Wright, and singer-songwriter/frontman for The Waterboys, Mike Scott. The band got their name from a Lou Reed song, and they’re obviously inspired by Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Celtic music. I discovered The Waterboys in the early 80s wave of music that gave us The Alarm and U2, as they have similar literary and spiritual themes. I’ve performed Scott’s “Whole of the Moon” solo acoustic, and here’s a band demo we did of his song “Spirit.” We took it into a Talking Heads retro-pop style, with me playing a funky Vox teardrop electric 12-string guitar. Aaand, we start again. Working on the next project, an instrumental track called "Summer Song". Just dusting off the cobwebs from not playing for the last month or so, while I was finishing *The Fool". I'm getting the arrangement tightened up, and figuring out what will go where, what kind of percussion, etc. Fun stuff!!! . . This is my Danelectro 12 string, tuned to E standard, going through the Marshall DSL40C and Marshall 2 12 cabinet. . . Signal Chain: Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner, Morley Volume Pedal, MXR Micro Amp, Electro-Harmonix Key9 Electric Piano Machine, Boss LS-2 Line Selector; in the effects loop: MXR Black Label Chorus, MXR KFK Ten Band EQ, MXR Carbon Copy Bright Analog Delay, Boss RV-6 Reverb, Electro-Harmonix Cathedral Stereo Reverb. I also have two TC Electronic Bona Fide Buffers, one on each board. This is all into the clean channel on the amp, gain on 5, volume at 5, running at half power. Two doors down from me is the office of long-time Fender creative / branding / design guru / all-around great guy Rich Siegle. Rich rounded the corner a few days back with his stunning new Alternate Reality Electric XII in hand. After strumming a few delightful tunes, the guitar immediately hit the desk and bench for a few photos. This is that kind of guitar that commands a certain *stank face* to be properly enjoyed while strapped on, and I’ve captured Rich capably demonstrating that for us as well. If you’ve never played an electric 12 string you really must make plans to do so - personally I find that I frequently cannot even touch one without a new song managing to emerge.
