Robert Sugden: Christopher Smith (2001) - the end
I was so worried about mum… and dad… I never did ring 999. Maybe if I had… 😢 (Gifs)

It was really weird. Stuff was happening but… none of it made any sense. It was like a really bad dream. (1 of 3)
Robert takes the stand about the events around the fire. Browning’s cross examination leads to Robert offering up an alibi for Andy unknowingly. Browning brings up his having stayed at Kathy’s and suggests being frightened of his brother or Jack punishing him over his getting the money for the school trip from Richie. Afterwords, Robert is feeling terrible about everything, he’s certain Jack is gonna be found guilty. Andy is next to testify…
Kathy: I’ve been in court a few times myself and you always come out feeling like… you’ve been torn to pieces but… that’s their job.
Robert: I don’t care what happened to you! They’re gonna find him guilty, I know they are. They’re gonna send my dad to prison!!

Oh my God! Oh my God, you were there too, weren’t you!… It was you!!! (3 of 3)
Andy has run off to see Cain as his sounding board. Unfortunately, knowing who Cain is at that time, suggests they go after Richie and take care of him if Jack does go down. Jack is in a terrible state thinking about how the trial is killing his boys. Andy breaks into Richie’s. With crowbar in one hand and the other hand on Richie’s throat, Andy demands he tell the truth. That’s when Richie realizes it was Andy who started the fire! Violins as Andy explains what happened.
Andy: Nowt? Cain, I can’t do nowt, I’ve gotta do something. It’s me dad. I owe it to him. Otherwise… what’s it been for, eh?
Cain: Listen. If he gets off, great. But if he goes down then… well… we’ll wait a few weeks, middle of the night, do the window, up the stairs. I’ll be right behind ya. Richie won’t even know what’s hit him. You know what I mean?

He wasn’t out there! Don’t you understand anything! (2 of 3)
Next to testify is Andy who gets so frustrated by Browning’s cross examination insinuating he can’t be certain Jack was asleep when the fire started that he storms off, having enough of it all. Back home, Andy’s temper flairs up big time going after Robert since he believes Jack is guilty then going after Kathy venomously as well (‘no wonder you can’t keep a bloke long enough to have any of your own kids’) then runs out of the house but not before saying ‘DROP DEAD.’ Betty gossips about the trial in the pub.
Andy: I’ve had enough! I’m not answering all your questions!
Jack: Andy! Behave yourself.
Judge: Mr. Sugden, please.
Andy: This is all your fault this.
Jack: Andy.
Andy: Just get off my back the lot of ya!
