Conversation about Edelgard makes me really nervous and I think I’ve started to unpack why. 

In an objective sense, Edelgard’s story is designed to make you question your perception of the politics and morality of Fodlan, and normally I’m all about that in writing! And something that I, a jaded adult, have to remember is that some stories have to be entry-level, because a lot of people... are at entry level in literature and media. Things that seem obvious to me still have value because they’re not obvious to everyone. (And things that are obvious can still be meaningful, of course.)

But on the other hand... Edelgard’s story reflects our own world, especially the United States, in an unsettling way. Not to suggest that our current political leaders have anywhere near Rhea’s charisma, it’s more symbolic than that - an established order built upon twisted history, a system of privilege and manipulation that is deeply sinister and damaging to the world but is run by people with good intentions. 

Some people in this world are protective of the order because it has protected them. Maybe they benefited from its privilege, but in many cases, they benefited instead from the benevolence of its leaders, and they’re supporting those leaders because they were good people. Rhea is a good person, and she’s touched peoples’ lives in a positive way, and those people - understandably, rightfully - protect her in turn. 

But Edelgard, and many others, have been hurt by this system, too. And Edelgard is livid with it. There’s no pretending that she isn’t at least partially motivated by her anger. But there’s also no pretending that what she wants isn’t noble and just. Revolution to free the world from its obsession with bloodlines, Crests, and social class. 

The controversy that surrounds Edelgard revolves around the question do the ends justify the means? People claim that she’s a fascist, and I can only imagine that that’s because she uses violence to achieve her goals. But people who talk about her that way - people who even allow for that point of view - make me nervous. They make me nervous because they equate violence to fascism. Violence to evil. A black and white worldview.

And they make me nervous because Edelgard is so overwhelmingly obviously not evil. Edelgard speaks often in her route of how she has steeled herself to do something she doesn’t want to do, that she has decided she will do whatever it takes to see through her ends, even if it makes her a monster. She has decided that the ends justify the means. And even with that resolution, she worries. She depends on the people around her to keep her grounded, to remind her of her purpose, so that when the time is right she’ll stay her hand. It’s a very important part of her relationship with Byleth. 

To me, Edelgard’s resolution is the answer to that question. If the means were not worth the ends, she wouldn’t be doing this. This is not a decision she made in haste, on impulse, out of raw emotion. This is not blind ambition that is allowed to rampage without regard to others’ safety or well-being. Edelgard is very careful and measured in her approach. She examined Fodlan, examined her options, and decided - clearly not without reluctance - that war was her best choice. 

If you’re asking that question when she herself has already determined the answer, you’re not paying attention to the game, or at least to her character. 

The reckless equation of violence to evil - as though Edelgard is the evil one for instigating violence, as though “war” is the only form of violence at play here - is a deeply unsettling mindset, and coupled with a refusal to pay attention to the motives and feelings of the one who stands accused, it becomes outright dangerous. It’s witch hunting. When you decide someone is guilty before you’ve actually seen all the evidence, you’ll fail to recognize the truth even when it’s spelled out in front of you. And you become someone who, despite your good intentions, is capable of enabling - or even enacting - incredible violence in the name of what you deem is safe. Because you think you’re right. Because you feel that you’re right. Because protecting the peace, maintaining the balance, is more important to you than understanding the scars that peace is built on and the damage that maintaining it must cause.

You become someone like Rhea. And Rhea is a good person. 

But Rhea is also wrong.
