Did you know the Star Spangled Banner was a 4 stanza poem and the anthem that is sung is just that first stanza? I had no idea, or if I learned this fact along the way I had forgotten it. Due to current events it just got me thinking, the song we sing to show pride, to show respect of country and of athletes etc., that song is about war and bloodshed. It’s a celebration of death. Maybe if we weren’t so proud of war it’d be less easy for us to dive into war related activities. I don’t know, just thinking.
I wrote a short piece for Twitter and Instagram already. Here is another a bit longer including lesser known phrases from the original poem.
Day 6
Oh say can you see
in the recesses of memory
the place where you were when the towers fell
Do you recall whether
you stayed up all night
or if you were able to sleep
For me
I realized
those colors of pride
were the same found adorning bullseyes
I wondered
what would life be like
is it even truly a life
existing as a global target
To think our ways
have caused countless others to have that type of day
Reminds of Key's unsung blood drenched verse
"No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave"
Today is exactly 30 days til my 30th birthday! So I’m doing something fun, good or new each day for the next 30 days! Today I flew to Colorado for my cousins wedding!
Poem #11
so this one time
at art camp
i met a boy named George who smelled like Old Spice
the scent makes me feel sick now
but back then
i thought it was so mature
back then
i wrote a poem about the experience of eating a Hershey kiss
and i believe i painted something but that memory is webbed over
and delicately tucked away
just out of reach
i spent days composing a song for piano
i remember performing in front of the entire camp
my hands were shaking
heart racing
barely took a single breath
concentrated until the very last note
and then an eruption of applause followed
and oh i had wished
someone from my actual life could have been there
a witness
someone to testify of what they’d heard and seen
someone to say ‘i’m proud’ or ‘job well done’
i have the discolored sheet music in a folder
in my closet now
and that song is one of the things i’ve created that i truly love
most days i walk past my piano without a single touch
but sometimes
sometimes it calls out
beckoning me to take a seat
and sometimes i’ve freed myself from busying just enough to comply
and then the unnamed melodies float up as an offering
oh how bittersweet it is to remember
the song that sprung from me when i was just 16
Day 2 prompt was to write a poem that included questions.
Day 1
I cant sleep so I decided to do some exercises while I randomly clean the house and prep for tomorrow. I feel like death has come over me just in the cardio alone.:( Ive had to take many breaks and my body is already sore.
I prepped my food for the day (ill post later after I know I actually ate it) and kids dinner. Managed 2 loads of laundry and dishes. Felt like death just doing cardio challenge, which is sad hoping it improves.
Exercise:
40 High knees, 20 climbers #cardiochallenge
25 leg lifts (after the cardio these came easy and are only now assisting in sore legs and knees.)
10 sit ups, 15 bicycle crunches, 30 squats #ab&squat challenge (again frustration with the amount of breaks needed for my unhealthy self and the feeling of death is again surrounding my body.)
Now I'm tired and don't want to move upstairs to bed... :(
Day 13
one with a sorrowful
heavy
hardened
heart
and
eyes
beauty-blind
looks out into the garden
seeing
red
after
spotting
yellow
in
the
bluebell
bed
as she runs to grab the spray
she doesn’t realize
the nearing demise
of the dreams
she hasn’t yet
been
brave
enough
to
wish
existed
