#JackedKirby - The Beginnings Of the Super Powers 4th World toy line! 💥💥💥 The Super Powers toy line from Kenner Toys burst on the crowded action figure scene in 1984 and stood out amongst the pack... mostly due to the classic DC characters and some bold new character redesigns, the line was a major success and became just as popular as He Man, Gi Joe and Star Wars action figures. But the biggest reason the line was so successful is because it relied heavily on Jack Kirby’s 4th World characters... 💥💥💥 DC was headed in a new direction under newly minted publisher Jeanette Kahn. Jeanette was the first woman to occupy this lofty position, and she wanted to make a splash in some changes at the company. She oversaw the redesign of the DC logo, brought in a ton of disgruntled Marvel talent and forayed into the lucrative toy market... and she decided this was a perfect opportunity to pay it forward to Jack. She contracted him to redesign and update his 4th World characters he had created back in 1971 to be the cornerstone of the toy line. This was a great idea because the characters are amazing and but also it allowed Kirby to earn some sweet royalty checks for those characters who had been canceled so early and unceremoniously by the previous management. 💥💥💥 These awesome character sketch sheets were shared by Roz Kirby with the @kirbymuseum are from 1982-83 when the line was being developed. While some of the elements in these four sheets did make it into the line (Desaad’s chest piece, the new Parademon, etc) lots of the other great ideas here DIDNT. Pics 5/6/7 highlight some things i wish were in: The Boomeranger, Orion’s gun arm attachment and Desaad’s Shake Up torture chair! 💥💥💥 I am planning on re-reading the Super Powers crossover mini series comics (which Kirby also worked on) for an episode of the podcast, so I am interested if any of these new ideas that Kenner passed on from Kirby ended up in those comics. #JackedKirby - Headshot.... 💥💥💥 I am currently reading (this is Mike) the run of Forever People and I am completely blown away by how great this book is. The forgotten 4th World title, The Forever People definitely has a firm place in Kirby’s overall 4th World arc and in some cases does more then its Mister Miracle/New Gods counterpart titles in developing the 4th World myth is... especially when it comes to Darkseid and his minions! 💥💥💥 The issue revolves around Desaad, Darkseid’s lieutenant and main torturer. Desaad creates Happyland, a torturous theme park meant to bring pain and suffering to its visitors. This concept on its own is pretty amazing... and proceeds Marvel’s Arcade character and his similar shenanigans by about 7 years! Claremont & Byrne we’re clearly inspired by Jack when they introduced Murderworld & Arcade In 1978! 💥💥💥 This opening page special (of course!) shows the team hiding in the shadows of Happyland, formulating a plan on how to escape. From left to right we have Mark Moonrider, Vykin the Black, Beautiful Dreamer, Big Bear And Serifan. Desaad has stolen the teams Mother Box and he is trying to “execute” it (Mother Boxes are ALIVE after all) so the team needs to get it back and get outta there. Kirby once again goes back to one of his favorite character designs, the headshot... he uses the close up headshot so effectively on every book he ever did! 💥💥💥 Pic 2 is kinda cool to me because in his credit box Kirby was strutting his stuff. Since coming over to DC he had Carte Blanche... he was the only creative person working on the development of his books. Writing and Penciling the stories, editing his own work, picking out backup reprint stories from his past work and also providing covers... he really was in charge of it all. One thing he always hated doing was inking... so he was happy to enlist his old Thor compatriot (the often maligned) Vince Colletta for the task. #JackedKirby - Mister Miracle Monday’s with Dr. Bedlam!!!! 💥💥💥 It’s Monday.... that means it’s time for some Mister Miracle!!!! Today we are gonna visit a unique villain from Scott Free’s rouges gallery... Dr. Bedlam!!!! 💥💥💥 Dr. Bedlam pops up in the pages of #Issue3 of the Mister Miracle series (published in August of 1971) on a page that utilizes a traditional 6 panel grid... Kirby utilizes this standard layout to illustrate a “transformation” as Bedlam materializes.... it reminds me a lot of the werewolf transformation from the classic Lon Cheney Universal movie (and most other Werewolf movies since) as he slowly begins to take shape... 💥💥💥 Kirby opens the next page with half page splash that conveys the character in all his glory... the large head and ominous eye brows of Bedlam convey a feeling of dread and despair in just one panel.... but the coolest thing is that this isn’t even Bedlam’s real flesh and blood body at all... it’s a robot clone!!! 💥💥💥 Bedlam is a form of energy consciousness that can occupy or “possess” these clone bodies whenever he wants. The consciousness occupies these clone robots and can control up to six of them at a time. They are essentially quite similar in spirit to the “Life Model Decoys” Kirby made famous in the pages of his Nick Fury S.H.I.E.L.D. stories for Marvel in the 60s!!!! 💥💥💥 He is a brilliant scientist who has utilized his amazing intellect to become one of Darkseid’s top agents of chaos... and in this issue he develops the “panic pill” which turns 5000 people who live in a city high rise into bloodthirsty murders looking to do one thing... #JackedKirby - Welcome To The Satan Club!!!! 😈😈😈 It’s #MisterMiracleMonday so we decided to take a little trip down... way down! Down to The Satan Club!!!! Whattttt?!!?!? 😈😈😈 Jack was never one to be subtle in his ideas or concepts, so when Mister Miracle And Oberon encounter an evil Satanic Cult in #Issue14 of the Mister Miracle series (June of 1973) it’s not so shocking... they encounter the cult attempting to kidnap someone in the woods (Pic 1 is the full double splash, Pics 2/3 are close up shots of the same spread) and follow them back to their lair... Satan’s Lair!!! 😈😈😈 In Pic 4 we see Jack taking the opportunity to visualize this cults home turf as a very creepy “haunted house”.... and excellent use of an opportunity. He could have drawn just any building... but he went with the classic haunted house motif and killed it! The New England colonial styled home looks creeky and aged, and sets the mode for the cult encounter to follow!!! 😈😈😈 The cult is led by Madam Evil Eyes (again, Jack was never subtle) and MM and Oberon are captured. The cult plan to sacrifice MM to Satan, so he in entrapped in the claws of a giant statue of the Dark Lord (Pic 5). Of course Scott Free isn’t so easily subdued... so he escapes the stone handed grip and begins to mete our justice as only a New God can!!! 😈😈😈 This one off cult story is a great opportunity for Kirby to experiment with numerous masks/helmets of the cultists, seen in the splash page. #JackedKirby - Apokolips x New Genesis!!! 🌑🌎🌑🌎 At the heart of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Saga is the ongoing rivalry between the worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis. When the Old Gods died their world was torn in half... and the result were the two planets of the 4th World! 🌑🌎🌑🌎 Apokolips is the burned out shadow world of darkness that is occupied by the slaves of the evil Darkseid! It is World of brimstone, fire and sadness... and is the exact opposite its counterpart New Genesis. 🌑🌎🌑🌎 New Genesis on the other hand is a place of wonderful beauty and the home of Highfather and the rest of the heroic New Gods. #JackedKirby - Mister Miracle Monday with Himon!!! 💥💥💥 Himon (and his storyline in Mister Miracle) is a very complex character/storyline and more proof that Jack had lots of backstory for the Fourth World that he never got to tell. In #Issue9 of Mister Miracle (August of 1972) Jack decided to take a step backwards and Flashback to a young Scott Free and how he escaped Apokolips and the clutches of Darkseid.... 💥💥💥 Himon is an inventor and rebel, using his inventions to help propel an army of soldiers against Darkseid. He secretly lives on the planet Apokolips as a Hunger Dog (the lowest class of people) so that he can manipulate events and cause trouble for Darkseid. Himon invented the Boom Tube and is very knowledgeable of the Source. 💥💥💥 This opening splash we see a brave Himon reaching through a Boom Tube to rescue a young Scott Free. It’s a snapshot of what is to come... in what is one of the most action packed issues of the series. 💥💥💥 In Pics 2/4 we see the final few pages of the issue, which show Scott trying to escape Apokolips and being caught up to by Darkseid. Instead of stopping Scott... Darkseid does the opposite. He gives Scott a choice.... stay here and keep the peace, or go through the Boom Tube and in effect BREAK THE PACT! This will give Darkseid cause for attacking New Genesis and breaking the peace treaty with Highfather. But it also brings Scott back to his original New God roots... and lays the groundwork for his love (and fellow Darkseid soldier) Barda to consider defecting too! 💥💥💥 I love the opening splash for the Boom Tube image, and you have to love Darkseid’s declaration.... both are done quite effectively.
