Ireland rn:
It will now allow the government to legislate for abortion, which is expected to be enacted by 2019 at the latest.
The 8th Amendment is dead!!!
This is the pro-choice generation!!!
Catholic Ireland’s dead and gone, it’s with DeValera in his grave.

We didn’t vote for abortion, we voted to get rid of the 8th.
We didn’t vote for abortion, we voted to allow legislation to be made, free of the 8th’s constraints.
“But it opened the door to legalising abortion!”
It sure did. But we didn’t vote to legislate for abortion. We voted so that it could be legislated for. That legislation could have been to maintain the ban on abortion in all but the most extreme circumstances. It’s not though. Our politicians are going to legislate for abortion without restrictions up to 12 weeks.
And the reason the Irish government is legalising abortion? We voted Yes and gave them the opportunity to legalise. But the reason they’re doing it? Pro-lifers. Pro-lifers are the reason why, the moment the shackles of the 8th were broken, our government jumped at the chance to legalise abortion.
Thirty five years. Thirty five years since pro-lifers introduced that abomination of an amendment in a childish lashback at the increasing secularisation of the country. Thirty five years since pro-lifers lied and threatened and scaremongered to pass that evil amendment.
Thirty five years they held the country hostage. Thirty five years they refused to compromise, to show compassion or common sense. Thirty five years they blocked any attempt to undo the sometimes lethal consequences of the 8th. Thirty five years of them accepting the deaths of women in service to some twisted ideology. Thirty five years of pro-lifers opposing legislation with zero purpose other than to prevent more women from dying because of the 8th. And this past month they continued to defend the 8th. They continued to defend the indefensible.
Pro-lifers had 35 years to shape legislation regarding termination of pregnancies, and they chose to defend the 8th instead, while women died. They marched with their rosaries and gruesome pictures to #SaveThe8th for years when there was no attempt being made to repeal it. Marches for Life pretending to be about saving the lives of the unborn when there was zero abortion, but not two minutes for those harmed and killed by their precious 8th.
Pro-lifers legalised abortion in Ireland. And now they want a seat at the table? They had a seat for 35 years and refused to take it while women died under the 8th. Now that we’ve made sure that won’t happen again they want to play nice?
WE DID IT LADIES!! THE IRISH YOUTH? GROUNDBREAKING. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? QUAKING.
I’m seeing a lot of (pretty exclusively American) Catholics and other Christian denominations online wondering why the church wasn’t more vocal on the 8th Referendum, why they weren’t on the campaign trail for a No vote.
That was 100% a decision they made and they made it to help try and secure a No vote. After the Magdalenes, the Mother & Baby hones, the child abuse and the coverups, the forced adoptions for profit, the contraception ban, the censorship, Tuam...my heart Tuam, they’ve learned one thing. Not to be less evil no, but that when they try and speak from a moral high ground they’re being giant fecking hypocrites. And that people have learned the exrutiatingly, painfully hard way that if the church supports one thing, you want to be on the right side of history and support the other.
If the bishops and priests had been out campaigning for No, then I guarantee you the Yes vote would’ve been even higher.
