Eighth Amendment repealed as President signs referendum bill into law

It will now allow the government to legislate for abortion, which is expected to be enacted by 2019 at the latest.

First final result in, and all numbers coming in around the country are showing a landslide. It’s looking like only a single constituency, Donegal, has voted no and the pro-life campaign have already conceded defeat. Voter turnout the highest in twenty years.

Hi, please no slander fer donegal in this ref, considering how bloody backwards we are a 48% yes isnt bad. Also 2 other factors being:

•Bundoran and Ballyshannon (2 towns down south) being counted in Sligo-Leitrim (with them we’d a had a 60-something% yes)

•All the young folk leave Donegal for theres feck all for them here. Between that, and lots of the student population voting in their college electorates, our youngins voted yes elsewhere

A fantastic collection of poems, essays, stories about the Repeal the Eighth movement. My only issue is I would have loved to read a chapter about trans issues. Nonetheless, this is an important book. Essential reading for anyone looking to understand the campaign for bodily autonomy in Ireland, north and south.

I have stayed very quiet during this entire campaign. My aim was to be respectful. Respectful to people I disagree with, respectful to people hurting, respectful to people in general being bashed and beaten with propaganda from both sides. That's not to say that if you posted you weren't respectful, I saw many people who campaigned with grace and dignity but I saw a lot of low blows and even now that the people have spoken, the mud slinging hasn't stopped. So I'd like to tell you why I voted the way I did, if you care to read it. I was born at 26 weeks, so my feelings on abortion as a contraceptive, esp at late term are not especially favourable. However that was never up for debate. We are offering women in crisis situations up to TWELVE weeks or late term in cases where there are fatal foetal abnormality, or a risk to the mother's life, the option to healthcare and support at home. We are making sure that women who are going through miscarriages, do not have to suffer over extended periods or knock on deaths door, and women do not have to lose their lives simply because they became pregnant.
