Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley are getting married
because they’re traditionalists, so they won’t see each other before the ceremony, but they miss each other far too much to stay apart.

Owen smiles as he sits next to Judd on the patio, eyes firmly fixed on TK and Carlos. The whole team is at Judd’s place for a family barbecue, and it’s the first time their youngest, two-year old Ana, has been here for it. TK had voiced concerns about bringing her - apparently Ana gets nervous around lots of people - but she seems in her element now, giggling happily from her perch on Carlos’s shoulders.
“This is something, ain’t it?” Judd says, nudging Owen gently. A glance at him shows his gaze is set in the direction of his own family - nine-year old Bekka, five-year old Tommy, and little Sara asleep in Grace’s lap. He’s wearing a lovesick smile that Owen knows well, though he doesn’t say anything, knowing Judd would only deny it.
“It’s something,” he agrees.
And it is. In all his dreams about the future, Owen’s not sure if he ever imagined something like this - a future where he and his family are all safe, and happy, and, most importantly, together. Back in New York, back when he’d got his cancer diagnosis, he’d assumed he wouldn’t live to see it. But he’s almost ten years in remission now, and, though there have been a couple of scares, things are going well.
A shout across the yard draws his attention, and his smile only grows at the sight of TK being wrestled to the ground by Tommy and Oscar, his and Carlos’s oldest. Marjan is egging them on from the sidelines and, though TK is putting up a token fight, they all know he’ll let the kids win. He’s good with them like that.
“You know,” he says, tearing his eyes away and turning to Judd, “this is all I ever wanted for him. I suppose it’s what every parent wants for their kid, but with TK… I don’t know. I guess I was afraid that, with his past and everything he’s been through, he’d never get the chance.”
“The kid’s strong,” Judd replies, and Owen smiles at his continued insistence on calling TK ‘kid’, no matter how old they are. “He was always going to make it.”
Owen wishes he could say he’s always had the same faith. He feels an age-old guilt well up in him at the realisation that he hasn’t; that, at multiple points, if he’s being truly honest, he lost hope in his son.
He returns his gaze to his family. Ana is getting restless on Carlos’s shoulders, clearly wanting to join in on the action, so Carlos pulls himself away from his conversation with Paul and picks her up. He grins wickedly at TK before placing her down square on his chest, at which point she starts gleefully joining the boys in their attack. TK manages to look disgruntled for all of two seconds, his expression quickly changing to one of fond adoration as he looks down at his daughter.
That’s a look Owen knows well, too, and he’s grateful his son has had the chance to feel the same happiness he once felt. A greater happiness, even; Owen almost envies the love TK and Carlos have found in each other and in their family.
The road here was bumpy, and uncertain, but he knows that none of that matters anymore.
What matters is that they’re here, and they’re happy, and it’s all Owen could ever dream.
come back (be here)
TK shook his head and sniffled, then sat up. He scrubbed a hand down his face and leaned forward to grab Carlos' lax hand, stroking it gently.
"You know, this was not how I wanted to spend the night before my wedding," TK muttered to the room, not sure if he was talking to his fiance or his father.
Thank you @meloingly for helping me navigate all things medical in this fic 🖤 😭 and @tkstrrand for being an amazing beta 🖤

"How is he?"
TK's eyes didn't stray away from the prone figure on the hospital bed. His hand trembled as he lifted it up from his lap and touched it to his fiance's.
"He's cold," he managed to whisper, eyes still glued to the too still body, to the tube attached to his throat that was breathing for him, to the bandages covering his head and most of his chest.
Nancy stood beside him, her hands rubbing up and down his arms gently. "He's gonna be okay, TK."
"I hope so."
"He will be."
TK wished he could believe her.

Written for @911inthefuture week’s day 2 prompt “we are not seriously writing our own vows, are we?” + humor
summary:
TK pokes him in the side and he tries to bite down his grin, but he fails miserably. “It’s our wedding night, if you don’t stop talking about paperwork, I’ll divorce you.”
“That’d be another form to fill,” Carlos points out, casually, his eyes closed and an easy smile on his face, as if the state of their marriage would really depend on whether TK can bother to file for a divorce
