myths around the world challenge: @ibuzoo & @thewinedarksea
efik - abassi, considered to be the supreme creator who lives in the sun
Abassi: The Zealous God of the Efik
Abassi is a prominent deity in the religious traditions of the Efik people of southeastern Nigeria. Known primarily as a sky god, Abassi holds a position of immense power and reverance within the Efik pantheon, often regarded as the creator of the universe and all living things. Despite his overwhelming authoirty, the mythology surrounding Abassi presents a nuanced character—one of both power and moral restraint, shaped significantly by his wife, Atai.
According to Efik belief, Abassi created the world and humanity, initially intending to live among humans and maintain direct oversight over their actions. However, his zealous nature and strict adherence to order created a tension between divine authoirty and human freedom. It easily on the counsel of his wife, Atai, that Abassi made the critical decision to withdraw from the immediate affairs of humankind. Atai, often interpreted as a goddess of wisdom and discernment, advised him that humans required a measure of autonomy to flourish. Taking her advice, Abassi retreated to the heavens, leaving humans to govern themselves while maintaining his role as their ultimate judge and overseer.
The withdrawal of Abassi from the immediate world underscores an important aspect of Efik cosmology: The balance between divine oversight and human agency. While Abassi retains the authoirty to reward or punish, his physical separation emphasizes a model of indirect governance, where humans must navigate moral and societal responsibilities largely on their own. This narrative suggests that the Efik understood the divine not merely as an imposition of power but as a guiding force that permits human growth and ethical development.
Abassi's zealousness is further reflected in the rituals and ceremonies dedicated to him. Offerings and prayers often focus on seeking his favor appeasing his judgement, demonstrating the continued recognition of his authoirty despite his physical absence. The duality of Abassi's character—strict yet wise, zealous yet restrained—offers a complex understanding of divinity, emphasizing that even the most powerful beings benefit from counsel and that temperance is a virtue even for the gods.
In conculsion, Abassi exemplifies the Efik conception of a sky god whose power is tempered by wisdom. His withdrawal from the world at the guidance of Atai represents a divine acknowledgement of human autonomy and the necessity of moral responsibility. Trough Abassi, the Efik convey a worldview that blasnces reverence for authoirty wufh the importance of human agency, illustrating a sophisticated interplay between divine oversight and the freedom of mortals.

Among the marble and tiled tombs of the Abassid nawabs of Derawar in the Cholistan desert in Pakistan’s Punjab province. We arrived at dawn, and I was quietly wandering with my camera and tripod when this chap awoke and came over. He politely asked me to leave, as visitors are discouraged from entering the compound. Apparently the elegant marble tomb beyond is that of the last nawab, Sadeq Muhammad Khan Abbasi’s English wife.
