Had to endure a “conversation” with someone yesterday about how mass shootings have nothing to do with gun control and everything to do with not controlling mentally ill people.
“They don’t know what’s going on around them. They need help but we don’t have any mental hospitals anymore. Doctors aren’t evil! They’re trying to help you!
“I knew a girl and was friends with her who had schizophrenia and it made her anti-Semitic and racist. It just distorts their world view. They don’t know what’s real.”
“Gun control wouldn’t do anything. People would just find even worse ways to kill people. I mean, just look at Japan!”
I didn’t argue with her because 1: lost cause, and 2: every time I tried saying anything she’d just say “Oh, no. No no no that’s not true.” Or go “Hmmmm. Errr. I don’t think that’s right. Maybe for some mentally ill people.” (for example. when I said that mentally ill people are more likely to harm themselves than others.)
I mentioned at the very beginning of the conversation that I was autistic but that super didn’t stop her from saying some pretty terrible things about mentally ill people right to my face.
Same girl who in an earlier class had said “I feel like the Hawkeye initiative has stopped being about promoting sexy male super heroes and has become about censorship. It’s really disappointing.” and refused any idea that women in media were oversexualized.
