my school friends are bullying me for liking object shows again
my intro psych teacher had an eight-year-old nonverbal autistic daughter and on the last day of class she brought the kid in and let us ask questions about autism and whatnot and it was really uncomfortable bc 1) she said asd was a bad diagnosis bc "autism and aspergers have as much in common as anxiety and depression", 2) she was basically using her daughter as a prop, and 3) she knew i was autistic?
I…. have so many issues with this that I don’t know where to start
I mean, this teacher must know next to nothing about autism! I have a strong feeling she brought her daughter in without her consent, or without even thinking she’d need consent, which would be wrong on so many levels.I mean, going to unfamiliar places can be awful for autistic people. I can only imagine what it’d be like to be brought into a classroom full of people who are no doubt going to ask ableist questions! Especially with sensory issues that could be really bothersome to her
And like you said, autistic people aren’t props! We’re not just something for people to observe and ask questions about. It’s dehumanising!
If she said Autism and Asperger’s are separate, then she should not teaching students about autism because, surprise surprise, if you have Asperger’s, you’re autistic!
And to do all this stuff whilst knowing you’re autistic is awful. I had a teacher call autism a disease to students whilst knowing I’m autistic myself. Why do people seem to think it’s okay to talk like this in front of autistic people? Do they think we’re going to simply agree with their ableist views?
This was even uncomfortable to read, because she’s not teaching about autism, she’s teaching students to be ableist
"It's better to be dead than disabled." Yeah. Nazis felt the same way too.
A tiny shape on the screen.
It's magic.
A little baby turning and tossing. Occasionally kicking. If only it knew why it had to fight. There's a slight pause as the sonographer notices an anomaly. He breathes. How to explain this.
Spina Bifida
______
A couple sits anxiously in an office. The results are in.
Sweat.
Smiles.
Hope.
He holds his wife's hand, as her lays protectively over her swollen stomach. The doctor comes in, stoic. Shes seen the test results. They're in the file in her hand.
Down's syndrome.
___________
Hundreds of cases like these.
Not cases,
family's.
Many rise up to the challenge. Love their child. Undeterred by diagnosis. But
There are other families. Those who leave offices already planning what to do next.
A baby "deformed" cannot be born. If it's disabled it will too much a burden. Too much a cost.
What cost can compare to the life about to be lost? They can just try again after all.
What world is this?
A world where one must be in perfect health to live.
Fuck that ideology.
It's a person.
A syndrome, condition or defect is not a shopping tag. Some clearance item you can return.
Life is life.
Something cannot be partially alive. There is no grey area of morality. No question. If all you see is disability your blinded by the light they give off by being. They are warmer than fires and more vibrant than the stars.
Do you want to look at a night sky and see nothing but darkness.
rebelwheels nyc : Legit Vs. Ableist Inspiring (ep.122)
As a #disabled person, I often hear "you're just SO #inspiring!" but is it legitimate inspiration or just #ableist? What's the difference? This is how I handle it #WithCaptions
[image description: colorful background w/ glitter, rainbows and polkadots. text bold & black reads : legit versus ableist inspiring. in a blue speech bubble next to my face reads "it's a nuanced thing." I am wearing a b&w cat hat, black rimmed nerdy glasses and a red t-shirt. I am smiling. At the bottom: rebel wheels nyc. around me are rainbow unicorn cats and blue & white wheelchair symbols.]
Fuck-Customers is abliest!
Fuck-Customers is an abliest blog! They block many people who are mentally ill. For tiny things! They blocked my old blog that I deactivated over a year ago. They are bad. They blocked me cause I called out someone who was being incredibly abliest.
OK SO LETS TALK ABOUT DISABILITY/ MENTAL ILLNESS
I don't want anyone to ever feel like their disability or mental illness is something to be ashamed of. I welcome anyone to ask me questions about my disabilities. Education about disability is extremely important so Imma talk about mine. - Heat intolerance: I sweat in 7% of my body (mostly feet). Being over exerted or overheated can be life threatening as I have no natural way to regulate body temp. This disability could have killed me when I was 8, because a teacher didn't take it seriously. Also have experienced a great deal of harassment for it from peers in school - Turners Syndrome: A genetic Mutation where the woman only has one X chromosome. There are two types (Mosaic and Monosomy). Mosaics is where only some cells are missing the second X, in Monosomy all cells are missing the X. I have mosaics. Girls with turners are often infertile, shorter than average, don't go through puberty properly and are at a higher risk for heart defects and other illnesses. Also girls win turners often have difficulties in math, spatial relationships and organization. We are also prone to having skewed social skills. (often social awkwardness, inability to pick up social queues and such) - I am anemic. Have had two blood transfusions. {the mental side of things} - Anxiety: I have anxiety and occasionally panic attacks. I don't take meds and have learned to manage it for the most part - Compulsive Thinking: A by product of anxiety is compulsive thinking. I can get a thought in my head and it repeats and repeats and I can't get it out. This has caused me a lot of emotional stress at times, but again I manage. - Undiagnosed: I have problems focusing or paying attention, I exhibit many signs of ADD (sometimes I even have to stim to focus. Usually I bounce my leg) Anyway, feel free to ask about any of these. Tell me your story. Your not alone
An Oxymoron (By: Lavinia Love)
(In disgust and protest of euthanasia and any law legalizing "assisted suicide".) Euthanasia, such a delicate word but to some (voices unheard) it "helps" and takes away pain and the story stays the same "They'll have defects, never perfect" a doctor will tell not mentioning the kind of hell that a person is who recommends this people will say it's right not giving a chance to fight but those subject to these ugly laws should know "Assisted Suicide" is an oxymoron their life so short so unwanted a family, not to besotted thinks the persons life isn't worth living which makes legal a "mercy killing" but my voice will not be silenced it will rise above the quiet we may be suffering or disabled but it is us, who will turn the tables we will cry out no we will SHOUT our lives, though damaged beyond repair we still find a way to care because no matter how broken I stand by these words I've chosen unwilling to sacrifice my chance to live, or save a life so when you say murder is wrong congrats, you got it right "Assisted Suicide" is an oxymoron
