There’s something about the english language that pisses me off and it’s that there’s NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “IGNAVIA” AND “ACCIDIA” (both translated as “sloth”)
This is why reading the Divine Comedy in English is kind of a downside to understanding the lil red guy (*punches the english language*)
The “ignavi” are those who were “too lazy to think”, which means they never chose a side and always stayed neutral. Like, when there’s a decision to make, these people go “yeah no” and don’t do shit eu elections this year
“Accidiosi”, on the other hand, who are the ACTUAL SLOTHFUL, are the the ones apathetic towards any action, deed, basically every form of initiative.
To not confuse with “ozio”, which is the time you dedicate to yourself away from the public, and I DON’T KNOW WHY IT’S ALSO TRANSLATED AS “SLOTH” BECAUSE IT’S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE FIRST TWO (Petrarch will find whoever said this)
Ignavia = NOT giving a fuck about decision making or ‘marking’ one’s presence on Earth
Accidia = NOT doing shit
Ozio = DOING shit for one’s self
I had to get this off my chest I apologize ☠️☠️☠️ I always have a hard time explaining this to my non-Italian speaking friends and I’m always so close to pulling my hair
