Have you heard the news? Gray Mann, the third Mann sibling, is hiding something in his laboratory, and it's not a robot! Something worse? Should the TFI prepare for another strike?!

Daniel couldn't have imagined such an outcome when he signed a contract with Mann Co. for the position of BLU pyroman, but fate had other plans. Desertion! Betrayal! A pawn in someone else's grand plan to destroy Saxton Hale! A victim of the conflict between rival organizations—Mann Co. and Gray Gravel Company —he managed to escape from the BLU base, which was blown up leaving no one alive, only because he was the one who pulled the lever that night under pressure and manipulation. Even the spy, who had been pretending to be a loyal friend all this time while working for Gray Mann, did not live to see the triumph.

Following the destruction of the BLU Team, Daniel was captured by the Classics and taken to Gray Gravel Company in 1971, where he was interrogated at length about Saxton Hale and the Administrator. He never revealed any information, but his mental health and any common sense were deep fried under red-hot metal. In the timeline when Gray went out to negotiate with Hale, Daniel was dragged into a series of experiments with australium as a disposable material — a LAB RAT, all for the sake of studying the element and ways to maintain Gray's life extending machine.

Now liquid australium flows through his veins, as he is under surveillance, undergoing surgeries and experiments — thanks to which Gray's machine is also improving, prolonging his life. Thank you, Daniel! Gray Mann Co — freshly rebranded Mann Co which was overtaken by Gray — will remember your deeds forever. After all, Gray Mann plans to live for several more centuries. And Dan lives like this - day after day, gray walls, experiments, robots, and completely boring conversations with the RED Medic, who ended up here voluntarily - the madman! But Dan is not discouraged, because he is also here voluntarily too, right? He also hates Mann Co. Of course, they abandoned him! They left him here and are in no hurry to rescue him! And besides, no one actually died! They just left! They left to live a new life and abandoned him here! But that's okay. Daniel wipes the trails of liquid gold dripping from his nose and smiles. Gray needs him, and that's what matters.

Genetically improved human: his spinal cord has been replaced with an analog synthetic prosthesis that runs on australium and australizes cells. This gives him increased regeneration and physical strength.

Non-violent, quite friendly towards the Classics, deeply respects Gray.

Before tortures he was meek and quiet, now he is blunt, excitable, and cocky.

Keep seeing those golden silhouettes of his late BLU comrades, must be australium that messing with his brain.

Meet the Mechs!

Robotic teammates who can be modified to fit any occasion! Need an extra Demo cause the other is drunk? The Mechs can be that. Need someone to heal the team cause Medic is too busy pocketing Heavy? They can do that too. Pryo is bored and wants to draw and put stickers on someone? Adapter probably won't allow that, but Clockwork will!

Clockwork: A sentient automaton that's the result of an accident in a Victorian scientists lab. Over the years he's upgraded his robotic body taking on a humanoid form. He's slowly learning that being a person isn't just about your physical form, but the mind itself.

A lover of wind-up toys and antiques from his creation era

Runs on liquid austraium, but shhh! Don't tell the Administrator that!

Adapter: A strange robot that showed up one day and no one was brave enough to tell it to leave. No one knows who made it, where it came from, or if it's sentient by any means. Held together by rusty bolts, poor welds, and duct tape it's an engineering nightmare.

Vielleicht werden wir in Zukunft etwas seltener nass

Auf dem Hinweg war das Wetter beim Rausgehen mit dem Hund noch schön, auf dem Rückweg regnet es plötzlich. So ist das in Schottland, wenn man das Regenradar nicht ständig im Auge behält. Diesmal baue ich aber wirklich das Dauer-Regenradar!, beschließe ich auf dem nassen Heimweg.

Denn Aleks hat seit Jahren aus einem Astronomie- oder einem Kunstprojekt einen Raspberry Pi 4 (damals etwa 30 Euro) und einen kleinen Touchscreen (Preis unbekannt) übrigbehalten. Ich habe schon verschiedene Vorschläge gemacht, was man damit anfangen könnte, ein werbeblockendes Pi-hole oder eine kleine Kathrinmaschine, die mich vertreten könnte, wenn ich nicht da bin:

Kathrin: ich kann dir gern einen Raspberry Pi bereitstellen, der das sagt, was ich sonst sagen würde Kathrin: "Äh, ich hab den Anfang verpasst, kannst du noch mal ganz von vorn?" / "mhm" / "Hat jetzt damit nichts zu tun, aber (Wikipediaeintrag wird nacherzählt)" Kathrin: du müsstest den Pi dann so wie eine Alexa ansprechen, also erst "Kathrin?" sagen, dann meldet er sich eine Minute später und sagt "wie was, ich? hast du was gesagt?" Kathrin: dann sagst du ja Kathrin: dann sagt er "Moment! Ich mach gerade noch was zu Ende und dann!" Kathrin: in zwei von drei Fällen hörst du dann nichts mehr von ihm Kathrin: im dritten sagt er eine weitere Minute später "so jetzt! was war?" Kathrin: und dann wie oben.

Aleks hat meine Vorschläge abgelehnt, und ich habe sie auch nur halbherzig gemacht, denn es ist so lange her, dass es noch keine Unterstützung durch LLMs gab. Ich hätte es schon irgendwie gekonnt, aber es hätte lange gedauert und mir wenig Spaß gemacht.

Aber vor anderthalb Jahren habe ich mit Hilfe von ChatGPT schon mal was mit einem Raspberry Pi gemacht und bin deshalb zuversichtlich, dass es jetzt mit geringem Aufwand gehen wird.

Aleks findet die beiden Geräte wieder, händigt sie mir aus und sagt, dass er keine Fragen dazu beantworten kann, weil es zu lange her ist. Ich skippe durch ein paar YouTube-Videos, bis ich herausfinde, wie man das Display mit dem Pi verbindet, lasse mir von Claude erklären, was zu tun ist und spiele mit dem "Raspberry Imager" und dem Speicherkarten-USB-Adapter, die ich beide noch vom letzten Mal besitze, ein neues Betriebssystem auf. Obwohl ich mir nichts gemerkt habe, geht es diesmal einfacher, weil ich mehr ungefähres Verständnis der grundsätzlichen Zusammenhänge habe als beim ersten Mal.

Umständlich und verwirrend ist es wie beim letzten Mal eigentlich nur, den Pi so weit zu bringen, dass man ihn vom Laptop aus ansprechen kann. Der eigentliche Teil mit dem Regenradar ist dann leicht. Insgesamt dauert es etwa zwei Stunden, in denen ich gut vorankomme und wenig die Technik beschimpfen muss. Dann haben wir ein Dauer-Regenradar, das sich tagsüber alle fünf Minuten aktualisiert.

Der Raspberry Pi ist überqualifiziert für diese einfache Aufgabe, und auch die Touch-Fähigkeit des Displays ist verschwendet, es muss ja nur was anzeigen. Aber besser so als unbenutzt in einer Schachtel liegen. Gemeinsam verbrauchen sie 5-7 Watt, das weniger nasse Leben kostet also etwa 10 Euro pro Jahr. Und falls sich doch herausstellt, dass wir genauso oft nass werden wie vorher, denke ich mir eine neue Verwendung aus. Beim dritten Mal geht es bestimmt noch schneller.

Update: Keine 24 Stunden später werden wir schon wieder nassgeregnet. Das liegt jetzt aber nicht mehr an uns, sondern am Regenradar, das falsche Dinge über die Zukunft behauptet hat.

This one's just a baby.

Every house has a tangle drawer. You might not call it that. It might not even be a drawer. It might be a box, or one of those plastic bins. Or an old bucket. But it is absolutely full - in its platonic ideal, to the point that it is impossible to access or separate from its contents - with tangled cords, wires and adapters from 5 to 30 years ago. It might be passed down by generations of men. If there are no men in your house, you may disregard. Women are not blessed to know or experience the tangle drawer. They are not burdened with the mental disability that compels this behavior. Their house still has one, but it was put there by a maintenance man, or a landlord, or a long deceased grandpa, and has been forgotten. But we cannot forget. No. We await the day when a cord will be needed, when a TV or computer monitor will be set up, and someone will ask, "What kinda cable goes in this?" And we smile a knowing smile, and try to hide our excitement, at the vindication of our madness. "Oh, I have just the thing."
