It’s official! I’m 1 month on T!
a message to pre-t/pre-e trans people taking medication
ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR MEDICATION !!!
i recently turned 18, which means i just started the process of getting on testosterone. i’m also on a lot of medication, for various reasons.
as i began talking to doctors about starting t, they asked about my current prescriptions. i gave them the names of everything i take, my doses, how long i’ve been on them, etc. and pretty quickly we found out my meds were not compatible with the hormones
i saw my psychiatrist today and went through the situation with her, she knew prior to this that i planned to start t, and i told her my meds weren’t compatible. we went through every single prescription i take, identified which ones aren’t compatible with hrt, and looked at what we can replace them with
now i’m in the process of getting those specific meds changed to things that are compatible. everything we’re changing, we went through and meticulously checked that it’s going to work with my hormones. even though my t date is significantly delayed, we are back on track to me starting to transition
if you aren’t on hormones yet and you plan to be, talk to your psychiatrist now. then, when you’re ready to start the process, you’ll already know that things are compatible. ask questions, make your goals very clear, and don’t let things get in the way of your future. unless they absolutely can not put you on anything else, your psychiatrist will work with you and help you to do what’s best for you
LISTEN UP PEOPLE ON MASCULINIZING HRT! LEARNED A NEW SYMPTOM IT CAUSES.
Okay so the other day I saw this post that was like bi trans men and bi transmasc enbys, listen up and hydrate! and I was like lol you don’t need to tell me twice, I chugged water like five times today then I did a double take. I have been drinking a lot of water lately, more than normal which is already a lot. Then I remembered something I saw last time I went to the endochronologist.
Last week I went in for my first in person check up after starting hrt. There’s this form you fill out where you mention the symptoms that you’re experiencing. One of them was increased thirst/ urination.
So I’m thinking here wondering if I’m experiencing that. And yeah, I am. I’ve been refilling my 32 oz water bottle three or four times a day, drinking multiple glasses, waking up at ungodly hours in the night to drink- And it’s never just sipping. It’s full chugging every time. And I’m using the bathroom constantly and every time I’m pissing a lot more than usual. That’s not normal.
So I looked it up and turns out menopause (which is triggered by masculinizing hrt) causes dry mouth. The mouth contains estrogen receptors. When your estrogen dips, it affects your oral health and you end up needing more water.
So yeah. Normally I don’t make hydrate posts since I see so many of them but trans guys and enbys on masculinizing hrt, drink water. Â
Dear trans guys, transmasc enbies, and others who are considering or planning to go on testosterone:
First, good for you! Understand that this is not to dissuade you—this is to PREPARE you.
So one of the things you’ll read & be told about starting T is that your body odor will change. This is actually code for “You will probably become a sweaty stinkbeast.” If I might go a bit Illidan on you for a minute, unless you have lived in close proximity to at least one AMAB teen going through male puberty, you are not prepared for the smell.
I’m not going to sit here and come up with florid descriptions of it but. It’s bad. It’s so bad. And it will happen at the drop of a hat, because you’ll sweat far more readily than before unless something like medication is stopping that. I sat here at my desk sweating out the Texas summer with the A/C off because of fucking ERCOT and within a handful of hours I caught a whiff of myself and was astonished by how bad I stank. I’ve been on T for five years now and it still bowls me over. I’m writing this fresh out of a cold shower because PHEW.
So here’s how you deal with this: if you are not the most diligent about hygiene, GET THAT WAY. You’re gonna want this to be a solid habit by the time you’re on HRT. When your body is estrogen-dominant you can get away with skipping a day on bathing. Not so when you’re on T. ESPECIALLY not when it’s hot. Even if you live alone, YOU’RE not gonna want to smell that, and you’ve gotta leave the house sometime.
Now there’s a chance you won’t get hit as bad with this, but try to remember that others can smell you well before you can smell yourself. No one wants to be the smelly kid.
Scrub. Your. Ass. Down. Daily.
This has been a public service announcement.
[ETA] And before anyone comes in with smart comments about the ennui of depression being a primary factor in poor hygiene for a lot of folks: preaching to the choir, kid. This is one of those times when you gotta go do some good old Opposite Action. You will feel better afterward.
I think I'm healing pretty good
Y'ALL SEE THIS SHIT, RIGHT?? MY VOICE IS DROPPING HELL YEAH!!
started T today and i can’t stop smiling.
