Can I ask a question? I remember I was reading something on some other blog (unfortunately I can't remember the name of it) about the arcanas for the persona users. It only went up to P4, but, at least according to the blogger, Brown from P1 is a pretty bad example of the Justice Arcana. Like, he doesn't really share traits with that Arcana, or even its reverse, if I remember correctly. What's your opinion, and also, do you think any other characters happen to be bad examples of their Arcana?
I personally find it pretty hard to just flat-out call characters a “bad example” of their Arcana, since the Arcana aren’t supposed to be a personality indicator in first place, but archetypes of different life-situations and how they may rule our ways of dealing with or perceiving the world.
That said, I can see why P1 has some trouble with establishing WHY its characters supposedly fit the Arcana their Personas are assigned, and the simple reason for that is that a good few of them simply aren’t fleshed out enough. Hidehiko AKA Brown may be one of the first characters you meet in P1, but in terms of actual character development or effect on the plot, he’s inconsequential. In the writer’s (Satomi Tadashi’s) mind, it might very well be that Hidehiko’s life situation did, in fact, suit the archetype of the Justice Arcana; a time in his life ruled by how understanding of right VS wrong emerges, and how he has to be careful to not end up judging things as either black or white, but figure out a firm moral compass for himself. However, in the game proper, the character doesn’t actually have the chance to do so. He’s one of the least utilized party members in the game, which is partially thanks to him being optional.
If I had to think of other characters sharing this problem, I immediately come up with Yuka Ayase of the same game, though, with her you can at least see how the Magician relates to her life in the way how she treats the people around her. I addressed this in my video about the Magician Arcana a while back. She’s by far not as good a representation of the Arcana as later characters in the franchise, but the thought is there.
As for someone not from P1, I spontaneously think of Haru Okumura from P5, though the issue isn’t even REMOTELY as pronounced with her as with the two P1 examples. With Haru, the problem is mostly that she comes in too late, and all that relates her to the powerful mother-archetype relayed by the empress is conveyed almost exclusively through her Social Link/Confidante, as opposed to the main plot. So if you failed to complete that link, her connection to the Arcana can seem to come out of nowhere. But I’ve already talked at length about how Haru suffered from being introduced too late into the game, so I’ll leave at this for now.
