The Food Justice Frost: How Winter's Impact on Local Growing Initiatives Is Viewed and Addressed by Food Justice Practitioners in Boston, Massachusetts
This thesis identifies tensions between different social and environmental justice objectives of local food system practitioners in the Boston area. The “Frost” refers to the author's focus on how winter impacts local food growing, distribution, access, justice, and practices. The author situates their question within a framework for considering the environmental, social, and cultural aspects of food justice for both producers, consumers, and produce (earth, foods, etc).
The literature review clearly frames the author's inquiry within food justice and food sovereignty, non-food factors impacting winter food access (eg. increased utility bils), modern winter growing technologies, and the local winter food practices of Indigenous communities pre-dating colonization in. The analysis summarizes some local knowledge of winter growing and distribution practices and concerns. The empirical portion of the thesis draws from interviews with local food justice and local growing practitioners.
The main strength of this thesis is the analysis, discussion, and conclusion, though the thesis as a whole document is also a good example of internal consistency across literature review, methods, and findings, as well as consideration of researcher role in constructing analysis.
The author's analysis and discussion draw together practitioner awareness and use of winter growing practices with the complications and tradeoffs between social, cultural, and environmental justice outcomes practitioners faced during winter. These are connected to the broader policies around food justice and local growing in Massachusetts and in Boston and the necessity of recognizing that seasonality impacts many parts of the food system in food justice and food system policymaking. The author's analysis is thorough, their thesis is well-written, and their project is connected through their own experiences as a grower and an eater.

I thought they were bringing the original guy back to showrun DW? Idk his name.
OH YEAH......IT'S RTD COMING BACK...
Whomp Whomp...
I really disliked his era too. I can't fucking win lol. He didn't make DW. Tennant and Piper did. It wasn't the writing. The writing was HOT GARBAGE. It was their chemistry. Literally *everything* around The Doctor and Rose was kind of a Hot Mess Express. The episodes that were actual masterpieces were the ones Moffat wrote (Blink, etc) which is why he got the next tenure. Then Ten and Donna was all Tennant and Catherine's chemistry too. Martha is the second worst companion ever, only beat by fucking River. I just...you couldn't pay me money to watch Martha's episodes.
I mean.....COME ON! RTD was writing farting monsters. Pleaseeeeee. Anyone who prefers RTD to Moffat needs to find god because this didn't even become a serious show until Moffat took over. RTD simply hit the lotto with actors. If he hadn't that reboot wouldn't have lasted two years because the success sure as fuck wasn't resting on his writing. Eccleston and Piper were lightning in a bottle. Then when you thought it couldn't get better you got TENNANT AND PIPER. That is one of those "once in a lifetime" pairings. You can't dream of casting that shit. They dropped the ball HARD with Freema. She just.....can't act lol. And to add insult to injury her character was THE FUCKING WORST. Unbearable season. Then we're back to Tennant and Catherine which is again...lightning in a bottle. RTD got fucking lucky back then. Plain and simple.
I WILL SAY THIS THO...He stopped writing the show in…2009 right? That’s what it was I think. Because if Clara came in 2012 then that means Amy was 2010 which means he left in 2009. That’s 13 years of growth as a writer and in that time he *did* write one of my all time favorite shows. YEARS & YEARS is a fucking gem. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but his tenure was also SO BAD. Bro...farting monsters and garbage cans that eat people? There was also the one who like ate the dude and the dude's face was in the monster's stomach cuz he wasn't fully digested or something? IT WAS SO FUCKING BAD. It was terrible.
We shouldn't be disturbed if Ghana fails to qualify for the World Cup — Emmanuel Agyemang Badu.
We shouldn’t be disturbed if Ghana fails to qualify for the World Cup — Emmanuel Agyemang Badu.
Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu is dissatisfied with the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The West African rivals were drawn together for the 2022 World Cup play-offs, which will take place in March. Ghana will host the Super Eagles in Accra first, followed by the second leg in Nigeria. The winner of both legs will be qualified for the World Cup, which will…

Caitlin Matthews: UEP Thesis Award Nominee, 2019
Food Security and Regional Self-Reliance: A Food Systems Modeling Case Study in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia
Following Bolivia’s 2009 new constitutional Right to Food, there has been little policy progress. Through food systems modeling (including quantitative foodprint, foodshed, and climate change vulnerability measures) and qualitative stakeholder interviews, Matthews brilliantly investigated the potential for increasing regional self-reliance (RSR) in the Department of La Paz, Bolivia, and asked how departmental level policies can help to improve RSR, food security, rural livelihoods, and climate resilience in agricultural systems. Her outputs included two pilot food systems models as tools for planning and policymaking.
Abstract
In 2009, Bolivia adopted a new constitution that committed the government to guaranteeing the Right to Food. Despite ratification of supporting legislation, these intentions have largely not translated into policies with measurable impacts on food sovereignty, food security, or the livelihoods of small-scale producers.

City for All? A Geospatial Approach to Equity, Sustainability, and Gentrification in Seattle, Washington
Nick Welch’s thesis explores the use of GIS-based multivariate spatial models to identify urban neighborhoods that are vulnerable to displacement and gentrification. This thesis is exemplary in its detailed literature review of existing approaches to mapping gentrification vulnerability, and its discussion of their strengths and limitations. Welch then develops his own model-based approach using publicly available data for Seattle using a weighted overlay approach.
Abstract
Seattle is at a crossroads. Despite ambitious plans for sustainability and equitable development, there is no consensus about how to achieve these two seemingly compatible goals. A recent period of considerable economic and population growth has led to rising rents and home values. As a result, gentrification is a significant concern.
