ALIEN ENCOUNTER AT GULF BREEZE - Gulf Breeze, Florida. Did an extraterrestrial being come through here at one time to visit UFO witness Ed Walters at his home? (Pictured: A view of the overgrown back fence/yard at the former Silverthorn Road home of famed UFO encounter claimant Ed Walters.) On December 2, 1987 - at 3:30 a.m. - contractor Ed Walters alleges that he chased a 4-foot-tall “grey alien” off of his back porch before it was whisked away by a top-like, blue-beam-shooting UFO said to be floating above the school field behind his house. Gulf Breeze was made internationally famous in 1987 when Walters came forward with photographic evidence supporting claims of repeated UFO visitations. The town became “UFO Capitol of the World,” for a time, as a result of the Walters-inspired media frenzy and occurrence of dozens of alleged encounters by others. The UFO community, at the time, divided over Walters and his photos, with MUFON deeming the Walters case as “One of the Most Important Cases of All Time” and Hynek’s CUFOS ruling it as “a likely hoax.” The hoax contention gained traction when a model resembling Walters’ other-worldly photographic subjects was found in his former home and a local kid named Tommy Smith came forward to claim that he helped Ed Walters perpetrate the hoaxes - including using a trampoline to create the supposed “landing trace” in the school field behind Walters’ house. SPACE PENGUINS IN TUSCUMBIA - On the cold morning of February 14, 1967 - near Tuscumbia, Missouri - a rural farmer named Claude Edwards (aged 64) was starting his daily farming duties when he noticed something "strange" sitting in one of his fields. Edwards saw, to his shock and amazement, a large "grayish-green mushroom-like craft" that was perched atop a "tube-like shaft." As the farmer approached the weird vehicle he soon noticed "strange beings" - that can only be described as "green space penguins" - which were frenetically zipping around the base of the craft in a blur. As Edwards edged closer to the bizarre display, he found himself walking headlong into an "invisible wall" that was apparently protecting the “ship” (which he then estimated as measuring 18' long and 8' high with lighted "portholes" around it's base). Edwards then picked up some large rocks and hurled them at the saucer - only to observe that they bounced off the "force field" with no effect. The strange 3-foot-tall creatures then disappeared behind the "tube" and the vehicle began to rise, soon gaining altitude and zipping off towards the east. This unusual "Close Encounter of the Third Kind" was investigated by noted Missouri UFO researcher Ted Phillips who collected landing trace evidence that supported the bizarre account and who found Edwards to be a credible witness. The "Space Penguins" case remains unsolved and is one of the more interesting encounters of high strangeness in the annals of unexplained UFO lore. THE FANTASTIC FALKVILLE METAL MAN - October 17, 1973 - Falkville, Alabama. (Pictured: Enhanced image of the alleged creature itself / a nighttime visit to the Metal Man Encounter Spot.) While investigating a reported UFO sighting, Police Chief Jeff Greenhaw encounters and photographs a man in a metallic suit on a country road just on the outskirts of town. He takes four Polaroid pictures before the being "leaps" away across a field in an unbelievable stride. Bad luck soon follows Greenhaw as within weeks he loses his job, his wife, and his home is burnt to the ground. The strange encounter occurred less than a week after the famous Pascagoula Abduction just a few hours south. Similar beings were described in that case. A hoax? A prank? Or something else? The "Metal Man" pics became iconic imagery for a time in the mid-70s, appearing in numerous magazines and on the covers of many UFO books. The true story remains a fantastically intriguing mystery.
