One of the more annoying things about starting to seriously write again (and proofread, and draft) is that I'm now hypersensitively aware of the process when reading books.

I just started reading a new detective book (modern, not classic) and already I can pick up what was in her first draft, what someone has advised her to reword, things she should have reworded but didn't - for example, she has a lot of dialogue without contractions in a way that doesn't suit the character e.g. "I will do that", "I will find my way there" so don't read as natural, and even estimate the rough age of the author from word choice.

I can pick up what was in her outline story because she's structured it with very short chapters, which I suspect she drafted outlines for to get the plot going and then expanded as she needed. There's definitely moments of brilliance where she puts something just right from the off. There's also moments where she does a little too much telling rather than showing - which makes it clear this is an early book in her career.

I suppose more than anything though it's a little of a confidence boost and a reminder - to us all, perhaps - that you don't need your manuscript to be perfect or even your guidelines to be covered up in order to get published and be successful. This book is a high seller and has been optioned for a tv series. The fact it has short chapters and is easy to follow might even help in that regard!

DFP Actors August: Alison Bruce

NZ actors tend to end up in a lot of the same shows over the years it seems. I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1998/1995)

On Hercules Dean played a few different characters: Iloran - S1E12 "The Gauntlet" Young Iolaus - S4E3 "Regrets... I've Had a Few", S4E11 "Medea Culpa" and S4E20 "Twilight". Ruun - S4E7 "Prodigal Sister"

On Hercules, Alison played Postera in S1E10 "Gladiator".

Xena: Warrior Princess (1996-2000/1995-2000)

On Xena, Dean played two roles: Homer/Orion - S1E13 "Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards" Wiglaf - S6E9 "Return of the Valkyrie"

On Xena, Alison played three roles: Queen Melosa - S1E10 "Hooves and Harlots" Talia - S5E4 "Animal Attraction" Kahina - S6E5 "Legacy"

These shows reused actors so much! I am sure even casual watchers noticed.

Shortland Street (1996/1998)

Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996. Alison played Danni Brown / Nurse Lindsay Maguire. Sorry, it's very hard to find old Shortland Street clips and I have no idea which episodes she's even in, so no stills of Alison sadly.

The Chosen (1998)

A TV movie/miniseries I can't find at all, just this trailer. Dean played Andrew Scott. Alison played Denise.

Young Hercules (1998-1999/1998-1999)

Dean played Iolaus in 46 (of 50) episodes. Alison played Simula in 6 episodes.

Legend of the Seeker (2009/2010)

Dean played Carver Dunn in S1E17 “Deception”. Alison played Sister Verna in 4 episodes, between S2E8-S2E22.

The Almighty Johnsons (2011-2013/2011-2012)

Dean played Anders Johnson throughout the series (seasons 1-3). Alison played Agnetha in seasons 1 & 2.

Hillary (2016/2016)

Dean played George Lowe (in all 6 episodes). Alison played Phyllis Rose (in 5 episodes).

George is Ed Hillary's friend, and Phyllis is Ed's mother-in-law.

I just can't seem to get over the Rose family being totally cool with the age difference between Ed and their daughter... But at least she was a supportive mother? I guess? And I liked that they at least acknowledged that it was kinda weird.

The Brokenwood Mysteries (2018/2018)

They actually appeared in the same episode! In Season 5 Episode 4 "The Dark Angel", Dean played Barnaby Buchanan, a patient at the Deschler clinic. Alison played Fiona Deschler, who worked at the clinic and was married to Jakob Deschler (the murder victim).

Unfortunately this means that Alison's character was involved in Dean's character's torture. :(

Golden Boy (2019-2020/2019-2020)

Dean played Aussie Dave. Alison played Carol / Susan. (I haven't watched it yet, she's credited for both names on IMDB - Can anyone explain to me?)

One Lane Bridge (2020/2020-2021)

Dean played Andrew "Grub" Ryder for the first 6 episodes, S1E1-S1E6. Alison played Lois Tremaine in 11 episodes between S1E1-S2E5.

And that's all I have on these two. Did I miss anything?
