Angel (1999-2004)
Allen Doyle, Season One
CORDELIA CHASE & ALLEN DOYLE | "LONELY HEARTS"
Angel is a Whedon Show, and brings with it that baggage. But given the sheer amount of discourse that has emerged from redemption arcs, I think it is interesting because its an entire show based around the concept of redemption. The work that goes in, the reversals and advances. Is there a point where you are crowned "redeemed" or is that an illusion on the horizon? Is forgiveness ever owed? At what point does failing to recognize someone has changed cross a line? Lots of interesting stuff to explore.
And not just from the main character.
(Also that finale)
ReWatch: Angel (the series) S1, E1 - 3
Ep 1: City of... Nicely done recap, I liked that they used flashes from Buffy as Doyle ran through Angel's life. Totally forgot about Doyle's visions.
Ahhhh, Lindsey so pretty. Actually, everyone is very pretty (and very young).
Damn, they went all out in this episode making sure the viewers knew this would be a different tone: they killed Tina, and Angel pushed Russel out the window. (Can you fly? 🤣 - it was so good.)
The end is a little much, what with Angel watching over LA. 😝 But it's all good.
Fave Dialog: Cordy: (to Angel) Are you still all.. grrr?
Cordy: (to Russell)You don't know who he is. Oh boy, you're about to get your ass kicked.
Ep 2: Lonely Heart Watching Angel try and be investigative? It hurts so bad 😂
Oh right, Doyle hid his half-demoness from Cordy for a while. His reaction to Coryd's apartment is hilarious because at first he was so excited about how messy it is but then steps in a bowl. And then Angel looks around and questions her living there as well. Which is kind of rude, but made for a chuckle.
And it's normal for Kate to go off on her own, being a solo police person? That doesn't seem very safe. It's nice thought that it only lasts for one episode (Kate thinking he's a murderer).
Nothing's cuter than Angel offering to go out with Doyle and Cordy only for Crody to say we'll just go home and Angel is so relieved. Introverts unite!
(I didn't even mention the burrowing demon thing that used cuddling after sex to move from one person to another. Gross.)
Ep 3: Into the Dark I remember Oz being on (when I saw him) but have no memory of Spike being on so early (I know he's a regular later). The timeline is odd though. I thought Oz had already been gone from Buffy for a bit but he comes bearing the ring (gem of Amara). Clearly I have the timeline wrong ... researches ... ahh it's because I got so far ahead in Buffy before starting Angel, the timelines are all twisted together.
And of course Spike is after the ring. Angel is tortured. Spike trusting the torturing vampire is naive for Spike, what vampire wouldn't want to walk in the sun? The episode makes me miss Oz all the more 💜 because his busting in with the van, two cross bows? 🔥
Even on rewatch, I don't understand why Angel destroys the ring. If he used the fact that others would continue to come after the ring, perhaps that was good enough. But the idea that he doesn't deserve it? (shrug) Ok fine. But he didn't have to destroy it. Put it somewhere (for a rainy day).
Fave Dialog Oz: Does he have a hat and gun? Cordy: Just fangs Oz: (about Angel) He's very pale. Paler than most people.
Doyle: (to Angel) You really have an addiction to the brooding part of life, anyone tell you that?
