A Memory Called Empire
A Man Called Eddie
Chapter III:
“Eddie, this is Maddie, your extremely qualified replacement, and her brother Evan,”
Eddie twists in his seat to snap back at Josh, already far too irritated with how his beer has gone lukewarm and bitter. He’s not even tipsy yet.
“Actually, it’s just-“
“Buck?”
“Eddie!”
God, this might be in Eddie’s top ten worst moments. He can feel Josh’s eyes darting between both of them, May giggling not-so-subtly into her hand, and even Maddie looks completely mystified. All of a sudden, his petty outfit choices seem to be the worst idea he’s ever had, and the glitter on his cheeks feels like it’s burning his skin. Maybe he’s allergic.

Hello I am currently on a bent of reading only Hugo award winners/nominees. I read A Memory Called Empire/A Desolation Called Peace bc of your blog, can u recommend what I should read next!!
wow! Hope you enjoyed them! I'm not sure if you want recs based on hugo nominees or just in general so I'll do both.
Some Hugo nominees I recommend: Gideon the Ninth/Harrow the Ninth (has some similarities to AMCE/ADCP), Black Sun, The Empress of Salt and Fortune, The Murderbot Diaries, The Light Brigade (I liked this one but not everyone does.), The Broken Earth Trilogy (This is one of the best book series' I've read and I think everyone should read it. go read it right now! what are you waiting for?!). I'll also say that I have read all of the ones nominated for best novel for the last two years and thought there were some real clunkers in there. I do not recommend the lady astronaut series despite how interesting it sounds, nor the city in the middle of the night. just meh. I also didn't really like the ten thousand doors of january or middlegame but could see why someone would like them. Piranesi was good but I didn't love it as much as everyone else did.
If you liked AMCE/ADCP I would also highly recommend The Space Between Worlds. I think it's themes are similar, if a bit less subtle. Plus i think it SHOULD have been nominated for a hugo and I am still bitter that it wasn't. Also see: Ninefox Gambit (if you haven't read it I will tell you right now you need to get through like first like 50 pages before anything makes sense. but it has some....similarities to AMCE. plus I think the last book in the series was nominated for a Hugo), Ancillary Justice (probably nominated for a Hugo but i'm too lazy to check.), and The Traitor Baru Cormorant.
Mahit Dzmare × Three Seagrass
I’ve done it, I’ve made my first character art.
Is it perfect? No. Did I work hard on it? Absolutely.
I sketched this MONTHS ago and I finally got around to doing the color in the past couple of days. I have a lot to learn, but now that I’ve done this, I know how to correct some mistakes and make the process easier next time. I’m so incredibly proud of myself for actually finishing a drawing. Also big thanks to @dianapocalypse for answering my very beginner drawing questions and being supportive of the drawing journey of a complete stranger.
Anyways, enjoy the askreta Three Seagrass in all her glory.
Reading A Desolation Called Peace, I noticed that Three Seagrass’s point-of-view seemed a bit more... excitable than everyone else’s, and decided to quantitatively check that.
Some points of interest:
While Three Seagrass does speak with exclamation points more than anyone else, the bulk of her section comes from using exclamation points in narration, which basically no one else does
Eight Antidote mainly uses exclamations for frustration, rather than excitement
Mahit only uses exclamation points to describe the translated alien language
Nine Hibiscus only ever uses exclamation points in the funeral speech she gives
In putting this together, I cut out exclamation points from any other source, including non-POV characters, the Prologue/Interlude/Epilogue, chapter epigraphs, and The Perilous Frontier! (which is exclaimed in each of the 18 times it appears)
(data under the cut)
