Mark Antony
by John Cleveland
Whenas the nightingale chanted her vespers,
And the wild forester couched on the ground,
Venus invited me in th' evening whispers
Unto a fragrant field with roses crowned,
Where she before had sent
My wishes' complement;
Unto my heart's content
Played with me on the green.
Never Mark Antony
Dallied more wantonly
With the fair Egyptian Queen.
First on her cherry cheeks I mine eyes feasted,
Thence fear surfeiting made me retire;
Next on her warmer lips, which when I tasted
My duller spirits made active as fire.
Then we began to dart
Each at another's heart,
Arrows that knew no smart,
Sweet lips and smiles between.
Never Mark Antony
Dallied more wantonly
With the fair Egyptian Queen.
Wanting a glass to plait her amber tresses,
Which like a bracelet rich decked mine arm,
Gaudier than Juno wears whenas she graces
Jove with embraces more stately than warm;
Then did she peep in mine
Eyes' humor crystalline;
I in her eyes was seen,
As if we one had been.
Never Mark Antony
Dallied more wantonly
With the fair Egyptian Queen.
Mystical grammar of amorous glances;
Feeling of pulses, the physic of love;
Rhetorical courtings and musical dances;
Numb'ring of kisses arithmetic prove;
Eyes like astronomy;
Straight-limbed geometry;
In her art's ingeny
Our wits were sharp and keen.
Never Mark Antony
Dallied more wantonly
With the fair Egyptian Queen.
souls meet in dreams
“My mother, all of these things the Olympian brought to accomplishment. But what pleasure is this to me, since my dear companion has perished, Patroclus, whom I loved beyond all other companions, as well as my own life. I have lost him... “ - Burg (Ed.), 2002. Gay Warriors (p. 12) from Homer, The Iliad, Book 18
Ancient lovers believe a kiss would literally unite their souls, because the spirit was said to be carried in one's breath. ~Eve Glicksman . . . . . . . . . . . . . https://www.soulmatepsychicreadings.com Artist: Gustav Klimt "The Kiss"
shades of green and yellow
apollo smiles a golden smile
sunlight piercing through the air
zephyrus hovers unseen
casting a bitter green scowl
they watch hyacinthus
a prince with wheat in his hair
and spring in his step
as he smiles blithely
ruffled and rumples
not at all like a prince should be
two lovers together on a buttercup afternoon
a wind of green leaves
twirling and swirling behind them
a great gold discus
fit for the god who throws it
polished brighter than the sun
admired by the youthful prince
zephyrus now full of rage
some of it sent spinning through the air
flattening the grass
tangling the prince’s hair
bronze arm taut, pulled back to throw
keen eyes narrow, brow furrowed
the wind picks up
full of anger and jealousy
a discus hurtling through the air
seized by a vengeful current
seeking to do some wrong
now hurtling towards the prince
hyacinthus moves slow as honey
and the discus fast as light
which dies from his face
the moment he is hit
he has spring in his step
and youth in his face
but there is wheat in his hair
and honey in his last movements
and the sun has kissed his skin
zephyrus takes flight
apollo is left
with his lover and the discus
he casts the object of death far from him
not caring where it falls
only that it is far from here
he has more care for hyacinthus
a traditional farewell
a prayer for his soul
a kiss for his cold cheek
but bodies go beneath the ground
and apollo wishes to shine upon him
forevermore
so hyacinthus becomes hyacinth
clothed in dusky purple
and apollo shines upon him
and the wind leaves him undisturbed
