if you’re looking for a true, real beginner’s sewing project, look no further than the ancient Chlamys. Here are some modern instructions:
lay your cloth down on the floor (you can use an old bedsheet or curtain), with a bath towel on top of it.
cut your cloth to be one hand-width larger than the towel on all sides.
remove the towel, it was only a size guide.
roll or fold the raw/ragged edges of your towel, sewing them down so that the edges now look flat.
To wear: throw over one shoulder, pin over other shoulder. it will look something like a cross between a cloak and a poncho. google images below, assembled to be rough instructions on how to wear it. it is actually a bit difficult to get the pin in, if your fabric is heavy. lighter fabrics are quite easy.
