: • National Archaeological Museum • DAY 1. SCULPTURE : Amazons & Amazonomachy reliefs | slabs [ Pottery = tomorrow ] . • PART 1: West Pediment and Akroteria of the Temple of Asklepios, Pentelic marble, about 380 BC. Akroteria work by the sculptor Timotheos. . “The west pediment depicts the battle between the Greeks and the Amazons before the walls of Troy. The figures are in a highly fragmentary state of preservation, but we may note, in the centre, the figure of a mounted Amazon, probably the Amazon Queen Penthesilea, fighting two warriors. .. The central group is flanked by pairs of fighting Amazons, mounted or on foot, and Greek warriors. Slain Greeks have fallen to the ground in the corners and a dead Amazon is still on her horse”. .
