It's exhausting every time nonbinary androgyny is brought up, it's in the context of "you don't HAVE to be androgynous". 99% of the time we're just forgotten about, omitted from any sort of discourse or positivity, unless it's time to remind people they don't have to be like us.
Being androgynous doesn't get us treated better or more seriously than other nonbinary people. There's no nonbinary/androgyonus gender role. We're still seen as an aesthetic, mental illness, ideology. In fact, we're often more visibly queer and trans than fem-aligned and masc-aligned people.
We're a minority in a minority in a minority. Most nonbinary representation is, in fact, not androgynous.
And nonbinary people being androgynous is not even really a stereotype bigoted people have. Most of the time we are stereotyped as either "transmasc lite" (an AFAB person who has short hair and binds but is still visibly feminine) or people who only change their pronouns and do nothing else. Enbyphobes never jump to androgyny.
It’s the 20′s again, which means that we, of the wlw community, must update our wardrobes once more!
We begin with butch/stud fashion: an open-collar shirt, trousers of your choice, and a fedora or tweed hat. Be sure to leave out a button on your sleeve, however, in case you ever need to show off any of your guns.
However, if you’re more of the sophisticated type who plans on hosting a proper dinner party that even Henry Hall might find himself attending, then a three-piece tuxedo with an accompanying high hat is the best way to go (extra points to include a pocket watch). It’s perhaps best to let our dear, ol’ friend Gladys show you how the cats do it in Harlem.
But don’t let our androgynous pals be vexed! They, too, can partake in all of the fun, and they all look rather dashing in their do’s, don’t you think? They help show us that you don’t have to be strictly masculine or feminine, you can be your own, wonderful person (and look good while doing it)!
And finally, we have our beloved femmes. Such radiance, such splendor, their choice of styles can range from the simple to the most extravagant in under a wink. Their signature are their intricately-set hair, such as a bed of soft curls of a swirl across their forehead, but it doesn’t have to end there. Dresses dripping in jewels and colorful feathered coats also make up their sensible sense of fashion.
But don’t be fooled by their soft faces. Even the gentlest of ladies can hold herself down when it comes to rambunctious parties!
That’s our list, friends! Although we’ve gone through and seen a plethora of fashion styles today, don’t let it keep you within a box. Discover your own path, or reinvent what’s already been done with your own special twist.
Until next time, chaps!
Androgynous sapphics are just as valid as any other sapphic!! Just because they aren’t stereotypically feminine doesn’t make them any less sapphic. Sapphics don’t owe anyone femininity because being sapphic isn’t inherently feminine!! Androgynous sapphics, don’t let anyone make you feel inferior because you are downright amazing, 1000% valid, so important, and so loved!
