How it all started
Here we go — my second blog post! 💻💕
I wanted to share something a bit personal: how I got into anime and manga — aka the obsession that’s taken over my brain ever since I was a teenager haha.
So let's rewind back to my early teen years (around 13–15) — a time of awkward phases, stacked homework, and after-school snacks. My older brother kept raving about this “cartoon” he was watching. And when I say cartoon, I mean that's what I thought it was at the time too — I hadn’t even heard the word anime yet 😅
Curious, I gave it a go. That anime?
✨ Bleach.
I was instantly hooked — not just by the story, but the comedy. The banter, the energy, the over-the-top reactions — I loved it.
But here’s the funny thing… once I got deeper into it, I realized:
Wait. I’ve seen anime before. I just didn’t know that’s what it was.
Back in the day, I'd race home from school to watch shows like:
Dragon Ball Z
Digimon
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Pokémon
Cardcaptor Sakura
Sailor Moon
There's definitely more that i'm missing!!
I remember how slow English dubs felt. I’d be dying for the next episode and eventually gave up waiting altogether. That’s when I made the switch to subbed anime… and never looked back. The Japanese voices just hit different.
Later, when I felt like I’d run out of anime to watch (haha, as if), I finally dipped into the world of manga — especially shoujo. The tears! The drama! The slow-burn crushes! It gave me everything I didn’t know I needed.
I’ll save my manga favorites for another day, but this little journey is where it all began.
🩷 Thanks for reading my origin story! If you're reading this and also grew up on old-school anime — tell me what your first show was. I’d love to know what pulled you into this chaotic little world too.
Until next time ~

February is here, and in honor of Black History Month, I’m dedicating my reading list to manga featuring dark-skinned/tanned characters! While representation in anime and manga has been a long-standing discussion, there are plenty of incredible titles where darker-skinned characters shine—whether they’re fierce warriors, lovable protagonists, or underrated side characters who deserve more attention. This month, I’ll be diving into series that celebrate diversity, exploring how these characters are portrayed, and highlighting the stories that bring them to life. From classic favorites to hidden gems, expect reviews, recommendations, and fun discussions about the impact of representation in manga. If you’re looking for series that feature dark-skinned leads, strong supporting characters, or unique cultural influences, this is the perfect time to join in! I’ll be sharing my thoughts on character design, storytelling, and how these series contribute to a more inclusive manga landscape. Got a favorite title that fits the theme? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to add more to my reading list! Let’s celebrate these characters together and make February a month of discovery, appreciation, and amazing reads. Wish me luck!
