I find my home in the messy halls of crowded antique shops and the soft smell of old books surrounded by the comforting feeling of nostalgia that lays all around me with each step being one of an empowering peace of memorabilia

Went into town today (and have had a headache ever since because it was so overstimulating 😅), and I have successfully bought a washing machine! But then I also visited a bunch of the second hand shops in town.

One of them was a new place we haven't been to before, which was an antique furniture store, and I'm used to antique furniture being waaaay outside my price range, but this place actually had some stuff that I could afford (in like, a couple months, after I've moved in and haven't had huge expenses like washing machines).

This cabinet was R4500 ($260), and stuff like this is usually like R6000+ ($350) at other antique stores I've looked at. I'd LOVE something like this in my office.

There's also a block in town where all the charity shops are, and the two things I found interesting was this picture frame with seashells in it - I want to do a gallery wall in my office and I might DIY something like this with something other than seashells in it (like seed pods or shark egg sacks?)

And then the one thing I was extremely tempted to buy, didn't buy, and then regretted as I was heading home, was an old-fashioned magazine rack. It was R200 ($11), and I didn't buy it because I only had vague ideas on what I'd keep in it (crochet projects), but as I was going home I realised I could keep sketchbooks and my colour pencils that are in thin metal containers in it, and that would have been fun. Hopefully it'll still be there next time we go into town.

Anyone else out there into furniture? I’m studying to be a furniture maker so I find some of it so beautiful- I fangirl over Gplan and danish midcentury like I’ve just met Jayce Tallis. ( Slightly an Arcane fan btw)

I don’t know what it is about this stuff that I loved, but you can’t say it isn’t beautiful.

Look at it? Like compare the time spent on growing wood, cutting and seasoning amd selecting and putting a true face on it, and then design work and the nesting and cutting it up and joining and shaping. And then fettling the edges in and polishing amd upholstery- it’s beautiful for that alone? And the fact it survived an hundred years too.
