since i first saw wrath of khan i have always thought of the one in spock's "the needs of the many" speech as referring to spock's need to preserve his own life, but spock is an infamous self-sacrificer (as many others have commented on before me) and i don't think he finds it logical to be overly concerned with one's own mortality.
increasingly when i rewatch it, i think when he says that his sacrifice to save the ship and the crew outweighs one person's need for spock to be alive — he's referring to jim's need for spock to be alive.
