“Lisa, you’ll be wedded to the Prince, Miya Atsumu, next week,” Father stated, just as I settled comfortably into my chair at the dining table.
I whipped my head in his direction.
“The preparations are already in place. You’re scheduled to go to the tailor’s for a dress fitting first thing tomorrow morning,” He continued, not sparing me a glance. I blinked.
I glanced at my Father who was seated at the head of the long table. My brother merely continued on with his dinner, unfazed by our father’s announcement. Did he already know about this?
“His royal majesty, King Miya of the Southern Kingdom, has offered us the diamond and gold mines in the nearby highlands as well as the suburbs in exchange for my youngest daughter’s hand in marriage,” Father stated.
“And you agreed?” I asked, incredulous.
“Why, of course. Your sisters are already married, so who else would I marry off?” Father's smirk remained intact. He continued, “It would greatly benefit our family’s ties to the Royals and, not to mention, aid us in boosting our already lavish lifestyle. The income generated from those gold and diamond mines are worth more than what we already own.”
“But I don’t love him, Father.” I gritted out.
“Your mother and I had an arranged marriage. Marriages have always been of convenience, never for love,” Father spat.
“Jina and Emiko’s marriages were to their lovers-,”
“Their ‘lovers’ were important businessmen and nobles, crucial to keeping our business alive and bustling.” Father's tone was perfunctory. I clenched my jaw.
Just admit that you hate me, you coward.
“Father, I love Hajime. Iwaizumi Hajime. I want to marry him, not the prince.” I stated, staring him down.
He used to terrify me. With his brooding eyes, neatly styled dark hair, imposing frame, and an ever-present aura of might and power, I used to shrink in his presence.
I suffered years of abuse from him as a child - both verbally and physically. It’s a miracle that I don’t have that many scars on my body from all the beatings he would give me for almost no reason at all. These days, I couldn’t care less what he would do to me.
Father bristled. “Don’t be ridiculous. You cannot marry him. I forbid you to go anywhere near that servant boy-,” he spat.
“He’s a man, Father. An officer of our kingdom‘s royal army-,”
“-Whom I recommended to the Royal Guard - to keep you away from him. Your marriage with him would only taint our family’s reputation and you know that full well.”
You mean your reputation.
“Iwaizumi-san, take her to her dress fitting first thing tomorrow morning.” Father resumed, voice as cold and even as ever. My caretaker nodded silently.
Yūji watched this entire exchange with wide eyes. He only served to piss me off further. The bleached-blonde bastard knew about my wedding even before I did.
“I wish to return to my room, Father,” I gritted out, eyes downcast. My fists were clenched and my jaw, tight.
“In the middle of dinner? With your food untouched?” Came his reply.
“Goodnight, Yūji. Goodnight, Father.” I bowed slightly before turning my head away from the dining table.
“Fine, don’t blame me if you go hungry tonight,” Father called from behind me.
“As if I could keep any food down at the thought of marrying the prince,” I spat over my shoulder, harshly slamming the ornate door behind me.
Why did it have to be the more useless one out of the two princes?
I guessed it was just my luck that I would be married off to him and not his brother. Nor my actual lover - if I could even call him that.
Iwaizumi Hajime was the son of my family’s housekeeper, Iwaizumi Kanoka. She was also my caretaker and mostly looked after Yūji and I as kids, especially after our mother’s passing.
“Lisa-chan, go take a bath first. I’ll bring you some food in case you get hungry, how does that sound?” Kanoka-san asked, gently laying a hand on my arm as we entered my room. I nodded glumly.
How am I supposed to keep my food down when I’d rather throw up at the thought of marriage?
I watched as she left my room.
Kanoka-san was a small but strong woman. She and her son shared the same olive green eyes, and the same facial structure, though hers were more feminine. She was about a head shorter than I was - I had outgrown her by the time I was thirteen. Ever since Hajime left two years ago, she had been tending to my every need and escorting me everywhere. She missed her son and I missed my best friend.
I loved and respected her as I would my own mother.
Kanoka-san would often tell me about Mother, and why Father never remarried. He really loved her, though that love wasn’t reciprocated in the least.
I thought back to our conversation - if you could even call it that - during dinner.
There’s no way I’m marrying a prince. Knowing Father, he probably arranged for it to be on my eighteenth birthday next week.
I never imagined spending a birthday - or any happy occasion at that - without Hajime. He was my best friend. My only friend.
