My Notes: I was looking through my bookmarks to write these recs and I noticed that I left a note on this bookmark that just said, “Maybe one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read.”  But I didn’t remember the fic itself, so I went back to read it, and OH.  I instantly remember why I made that note.

There are so many small, elegantly worded, seemingly insignificant moments written in this fic that are actually so emotional and intense; aubkae is an amazing writer.  This fic is so subtle and yet so powerful.  Her characterization is beautiful, and the emotions John and Sherlock feel in this post-Reichenbach fic are so aching and raw and real.

Their journey to each other is beautiful, and so is the way they explore the gradual changes in their relationship.  Seriously, this story is gorgeous and makes my heart break into tiny little pieces of happiness.  I can’t recommend it enough.  I feel like I haven't said much in this review or explained adequately why this story is just so beautiful, but I don't think I ever could, so I'll just urge you very strongly to read it instead of telling you more reasons why I love it so much.  So, go read it.

Why I loved it:

I'm tempted to call this an "old classic" in the fandom, which is funny, because 2012 does not exactly imply vintage in day-to-day life. Still. This is one of those stories you find on pretty much everyone's bookmarks list, and with good reason. It's like a fandom shock blanket, keeping us cozy and warm, insulating from the harsh realities of life (and, if we're honest, from the madness of Season 3). Reading this delightful story is not unlike watching two pieces of a puzzle inch together in slow-motion. We get to see John and Sherlock finally connect after hovering around each other for what feels like eons. It's just as cathartic as you would expect, especially when their union is as sweet and delicate as this. I might have held my breath a few times. If you like stunning writing, vulnerable love stories and metaphorical fandom shock blankets, this is one for your favourites. Not a long read, either. (But seriously, cartoon hearts float around my face every time I read it. True story.)

yunuen suggested Steve/Bucky, number 14: tying up the other

He’s wrapping up an investigative excursion into an abandoned R&D facility with Tony and Bruce– he still thinks of it as an Avengers mission, even though ‘Avengers’ is probably a misnomer now; they’re not anything official anymore– when he discovers a storage unit full of leather-wrapped, reinforced cuffs and coils of high-tech metal-alloy rope.  His first thought is of Bucky’s bionic arm. When he went to Stark Expo for the first time, he thought the idea of a flying car was ridiculous.  Sometimes the degree to which his perspective has changed gives him vertigo. He brushes the sensation aside and calls Tony over.  Tony’s the one he notifies on finds like this, because while Bruce has a lot to gain from studying them, too, Tony has the storage space and the equipment to repurpose more sinister things. They wrap up the mission, get everything unloaded into one of Tony’s labs, and Steve– can’t let go of the mental images the cuffs inspire. The thing is, since Bucky’s gotten his memories back– all of them, or something close– and started adapting to his existence in one time and space; since he and Steve accidentally became whatever they are now; since they’ve moved in together– Bucky is so willing.
