Headcanon that Ty lee loves plum blossoms

There was a tree full of them in Mai’s backyard when they were growing up, and Ty lee would go home with armfuls of them every time they hung out together. When Ty lee leaves for the circus, Mai is supportive, but heartbroken. She gives Ty lee a whole branch of plum blossoms and they cry in front of each other for the first time in years.

After the war, they’re sitting in Mai’s backyard together, when Ty lee mentions that she saved all the flowers Mai gave her when she left for the circus, and that she pressed them and keeps them in a book somewhere. Mai doesn’t know how to respond to this, so she hands Ty lee a flower and smiles awkwardly, and Ty lee kisses her.

Their first date is at a really nice, stuffy restaurant, because that’s where you go on dates right? They end up ditching before they even order and going on a walk around a nearby lake surrounded in, you guessed it, plum blossom trees. 

It becomes a thing, where Mai brings Ty lee plum blossoms for every important event. Ty lee’s the one to propose, so Mai doesn’t have any on hand. She panics because, thats their thing, she has to have these flowers for their engagement. But then Ty lee pulls a branch of them out of a bag that shouldn’t be big enough to fit that, and oh yeah she’s in love with this girl.

They’re planning their wedding and someone suggests like roses or something, saying that plum blossoms aren’t practical and can’t easily be made into a bouquet; said person gets a knife to the sleeve and shuts up.
