Listen, sometimes a line just comes to you and if you don’t write that sucker down, it’s gonna be lost to the low-grade brain fog that’s infected us all since the pandemic started. I’ve barely been able to write creatively at all these past couple of years, and I’m sorry that’s more or less lead to my silence on various fronts. Hopefully y’all still enjoy this one. So with almost no context or story, here you go. (TW: kidnapping, implied torture)

Ever since becoming a super hero, Tony had grown uncomfortably used to kidnapping in all various shades and styles. He had to admit these ones had been more skilled than most. Knockout drugs, Faraday Cage to block all systems communications, stripped completely naked, restraints made of something strong enough to bind Cap so certainly more than a match for him, even with the added benefit of Extremis, and bindings not only at his hands but at his chest, his neck, elbows, hips, knees ankles. He was almost surprised they hadn’t gone down to each individual finger. Now the question was what precisely they wanted.
And they were quick to start.
“Mr. Stark. Glad to see you’re awake.”
Ah, false congeniality. Not his favorite. He’d spent too many years at too many schmooze-fests to really appreciate formality without substance anymore.
“If you’d be so kind as to activate your nanomorphological exoskeleton, this will all go much more quickly and much less painfully for you.”
So these ones were after the suit. He appreciated these kinds more than the ones who wanted him to build weapons or the ones who were after him in order to incapacitate the Avengers. Those varieties showed a startling tendency to completely underestimate Tony’s ability to cause massive infrastructural damage, even with very limited resources. At least these ones recognized that he was an actual threat, especially since the undersuit had migrated inside his bones.
“Sorry guys, not really feeling it. You could just let me go and we’ll put this whole nasty business behind us, hm?”
“Mr. Stark, we require your nanotechnology, and we’re quite willing to go the extra mile to obtain it.”
“Wow, a whole extra mile. Captain America runs twenty miles some days, so you’ll have to try a little harder.”
That was apparently that, because a moment later, bright overhead medical lights flickered on, blinding him to virtually everything.
“Hypothesis: nanomorphological particles stored in the blood stream. Likelihood?”
“Seems unlikely. The sudden reduction in volume when particles are activated might cause severe blood pressure issues.”
“Counter: the suit manifested by the particles is much thinner than initially hypothesized.”
“Interesting postulation.”
Huh. Actual scientists. Making actual hypotheses. A shame about the evil part of it all, because otherwise Tony would have been happy to talk their ears off. Instead, he said, “I’ll give you a freebie. The suit is definitely inside me. I’d love to see you even try and remove it.”
“Oh Mr. Stark,” said the first voice, leaning in so Tony could now see a human obscured by surgical smock, mask, cap, and sunglasses against the blazing lights. The human, the person, the kidnapper, brandished a fresh, glinting scalpel. “Ask and you shall receive. Ask and you shall receive.”
Why’d the avengers have to involve themselves in mutant business *again*?
Honestly just let the x-men and adjacent x-teams handle it.
You don’t always have to be involved.
