Asia Pacific 75 years ago today: Bombing of Hiroshima (6 August 1945) https://buff.ly/2OHjigp Although Japan was now isolated and starving, with its major cities laid waste by bombers, the Japanese government still refused to consider unconditional surrender. Anticipating enormous casualties if they invaded, the US attempted to shock the Japanese into surrender by using their secret weapon - the newly invented atomic bomb. Leading his Dervishes in a long struggle against foreign expansion in the Horn of Africa, Hassan met his first major defeat in 1903–4, when British and Ethiopian forces chased him into Italian Somalia. When, in 177, the Quadi and Marcomanni rose up again, both co-emperors traveled north to suppress them. In an attempt to undermine this understanding, the German Kaiser decided to openly support the Sultan of Morocco against the French, but, when most of the other powers sided with France, he was forced to back down. Germany promptly claimed the 1906 Algeciras Agreement had been violated and sent a gunboat to the Moroccan port of Agadir. However, France was backed by the Russians (their allies) and the British (who were alarmed by Germany's growing naval power).
