Dopo la bicicletta è la volta di provare un altro mezzo di trasporto qui in Vietnam. Ci dirigiamo verso la stazione di Hanoi dove già ci aspetta il treno notturno che ci porterà a Lao Cai.

Occupiamo la nostra cuccetta da 4 posti e pronti... si parte! Alle prime ore del mattino il personale di bordo ci sveglia perché stiamo per arrivare alla nostra destinazione. Lao Cai è situata alla confluenza del Fiume Rosso e del Fiume Nanxi ed è proprio il Fiume Rosso che vedo non appena getto lo sguardo fuori dal finestrino del treno. Purtroppo in questa zona così come in altre che attraverseremo poi durante il viaggio sono ben visibili i danni provocati dal tifone che ha colpito il Vietnam del Nord ad inizio settembre 2024.

Scesi dal treno prendiamo un bus in direzione Bac Ha. Ci fermiamo vicino ad un hotel ed immediatamente vedo murales raffiguranti le famosissime risaie e gli abitanti vestiti con abiti tradizionali.

E poco dopo vediamo tutto ciò dal vivo....

Per incontrare gli abitanti andiamo in uno di famosi mercati locali dove possiamo osservare la loro vita quotidiana. Qui ci sono tante tribù collinari che usano vestiti tradizionali anche in occasione del mercato perché non è solo un luogo per fare acquisti o per consumare un pasto ma è un vero e proprio momento sociale. Ci lasciamo trasportare in un mondo di colori, sorrisi e semplicità.

Ci spostiamo poi per una meta a sorpresa: direzione Song Chay per una navigazione sul fiume.

Infine anche una tappa per vedere il Lao Cai International Border Gate - Ha Khau, uno dei tre valichi internazionali di frontiera via terra tra il Vietnam e la Cina.

A poca distanza dal confine è situato anche il tempio Den Mau, il tempio dedicato a Mẫu Liễu Hạnh, una dea venerata nel folklore vietnamita come una madre benevola che protegge la gente e il confine. Il tempio è anche un luogo di pellegrinaggio per i vietnamiti che cercano protezione, buona fortuna e prosperità. 

Incuriositi dalle luci, dalle voci e dagli addobbi ci siamo avvicinati per assistere ad una festa tradizionale.

Hoang A Tuong Castle

Hoang A Tuong Castle is located in Bac Ha, Vietnam. The white castle was built in the Asia-Europe architecture from 1914-21 by Hoang Yen Chao, the local ruler and leader of the Hmong ethnic group, about 70% of the population in the area before 1945. He was known to exploit the people, confiscating their land and forcing them to build the structure. The location was chosen according to Feng Shui theory and shaped like an enclosed rectangle. Hoang A Tuong Castle serves as a residence and a fortress. After Hoang A Tuong’s was exiled to France, the region was liberated, and the mansion was left uninhabited for many years. The castle has one main gate and two side gates adorned with elaborate carvings and guarded by soldiers. The palace grounds have 36 decorated rooms with arched balustrades, columns, circular staircases, and tiled corridors. There’s also an emergency exit tunnel behind the palace. The two-story main house has two auxiliary houses on both sides with ceramic tiled roofs. Its walls, bunkers, and battlements were reinforced with mortar mixed with sugar molasses. Hoang A Tuong's Castle is currently undergoing restoration but serves as a popular place for the locals and tourists.

Mulling over all the native Vietnamese dogs... I want to help out all of them. Also, I'm a bit tempted to get my hands on a Phu Quoc Ridgeback again.

For now the goal for the Viet dogs for the time being (aka in, like, 10+ years) is to import, health test, and establish the Bac Ha Dog for me. Later on I might work with Hmong Bobtails.
