@performancehb ・ 💥Tight QL when sitting? 💥Rolling out not working? 💥Is your back feeling “tight” more days than not? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The QL muscle spasm can actually be PROTECTIVE and HELPFUL when you’re dealing with fresh back pain. Stretching it out will often result in more back pain over the next few days. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Try this instead… this position will reduce discogenic back pain (that typically tells the QL to be tight) and results in a significant reduction in QL spasm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Give it a try and see! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll be covering many lower back treatments, stretches and exercise for runners with lower back discomfort over the next few months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Come see if you need some help! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Just a few tips: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ Leave your belt buckle on the ground . 2️⃣ It can be performed on the wall/ standing . 3️⃣ Use your triceps to move your chest . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Always consult a trusted medical provider for a full examination before attempting exercises. If you’d like for me to be that medical provider, come see me in Southern CA. . . . 👨⚕️- Dr. Sebastian Gonzales DC, DACSBP®, CSCS Host of the “Restoring Human Movement” Podcast Huntington Beach, CA . 👣 follow @performancehb…. ...... Click the link on my @thebackmasterclass bio to join Causes of muscle spasm The first step to understanding what your back muscle spasm is telling you is to visit a doctor and get an accurate diagnosis. In general, most back muscle spasms occur because of the following reasons: The muscles are trying to protect themselves from muscle strain A back spasm can occur after any type of strain or injury to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons or ligaments) in the spine. This type of soft tissue injury typically heals enough within a week or two for the muscle spasms to stop. The muscles can spasm in response to an underlying anatomical problem If your back spasm does not get better in 1 to 2 weeks, or it comes and goes over time in the same area of your back, you may have an underlying anatomical problem in your spine. Some examples of underlying issues that could cause your back to spasm include: Facet joint osteoarthritis Degenerative disc disease Spinal stenosis Herniated disc When these or other underlying anatomical problems are present in the spine, muscle spasms are likely to keep recurring due to ongoing inflammation or instability. It is important to seek medical attention to treat the underlying cause of your symptoms, rather than just treating the symptoms.
